Hygrometers....need help!
    #772747 - 07/24/02 08:38 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I'm in search of a hygrometer and Radio Shack only had one that measured rh% up to 70% and obviously for my puposes I need one that can measure higher. Where did those of you that have yours purchase them and what was the price range...also a model or model# would work too. Thanks!

The power of the Internet holds the answers you seek. Goto your favorite search engine and search for Hygrometers. You could even try going to Ebay and searching...

Ok. Hmm. I don't have the unit right in front of me so I can't give you make/model info but I can tell you this - I bought mine at a garden supply store and it is a good one that ran me about $50 CDN. So it's a little pricey. But it's digital, super-accurate and gives you both indoor readings (temp & humidity with humidity to 100%) and outdoor (temp only with a sensor on a long wire - I just wrap this around the unit and put the whole thing inside the terrarium) and it also gives you a reading on the max/min temp/humidity during a given period. So with all this you get a pretty good idea of what's going on inside your terrarium.

Try a garden supply store.

I got mine at Radio Shack for $25. It sounds like it's probably one model up from the one you looked at. It measures temp and humidity up to 100%. When I get home, I'll try to get the model number for you

I use a set-up I bought from http://www.digitalgiftstore.com.

Oregon Scientific makes a NICE 3-channel wireless remote set-up that has three remote thermo-hygrometers and a base reciever T.H...

I can lie in bed and check the temp/rh of two different terrariums and my incubator and the ambient temp/rh in the room with the push of a button!

Less than $110 for the 4 peices. (receiver comes with one remote) and then you buy 2 seperate remotes in addition.

The remote units could also be used stand-alone (the have their own displays)

This is the ULTIMATE thermo/hygrometer arrangement.

Walmart will have 1 or 2 models. I picked up a "Bionare" Hydrometer/Temp for 32$Canadian, and it works real good (Sensitive)...

My experience with digital thermometers/hygrometers hasn?t been all that good.

I have owned the Radio Shack 63-1030 & 63-103's1found here
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=63%2D1030
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=63%2D1031
since about 3-1-02.

Like the digital units listed in your message and the ones here
http://www.grfrequencies3.com/items/weather/wireless_thermometer_hygrometer.htm
http://www.grfrequencies3.com/items/weather/remote%20sensors.htm
they all say are accurate up to 90% for humidity.

I can?t speak for all of them but I can speak for the Radio Shack units, as I own one 63-1030 & two 63-1031's.

I have never put the 63-1030 in an incubation chamber or a terrarium. It was used to read the remotes (63-1031) which were kept in the incubation chamber and the terrarium.

Temps have always been accurate but their accuracy in reading the humidity is not. They read up to 96% and will read no higher. After about a month the humidity part always read 96%. The only way to get it to drop was to let it dry out for a couple days but then it would go haywire after being put back.

Anno had suggested getting an analog hygrometer like the one found here
http://www.cigar-cellar.com/credo/humidor/page/p_hygro.htm
and to calibrate it as per the instructions found here
http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem/calibrateyourhygrometer.html

The analog is rock solid, the digital is not. While the analog and the digital check out fine using the calibration method they part ways in terms of accuracy in hi humidity.

So While the digitals read temps fine they don?t fair well in hi humidity.
The analog will read humidity on the hi end with no problems.

Or you can just buy a Hydra Pod and you wont have to worry about temp and humidity monitoring in most cases.

Again my experiences are only with the Radio Shack units. The others may fair better.
