Formerly called Clitocybe illudens. Two North American forms are recognized: Omphalotus olivascens from western N.A. grows on decaying hardwood stumps (esp. oak, chestnut, and madrone); O. olearius of eastern N.A. apparently likes similar habitats and may be identical to the European species of the same name.

I've only found these a couple of times, once in southern Oregon & once when I was a kid in Indiana. Not only are the gills luminous in the dark, so is the mycelia. A traditional name for the glowing mycelia-permeated wood is "foxfire." This was what my aunt told me it was called when (as a kid) I crumbled up a rotten log and made luminous pictures in her driveway with the fragments.

Should be easy enough to cultivate IF you can find spores or spawn--they're a woodloving saporophyte. Not likely available thru commercial sources since they're rather poisonous--contain high levels of muscarine which is some nasty stuff!

No, don't let him eat them. They'll make him sick.

Hey, Woodsman, I've heard of jack-o-lantern being called foxfire also. When I was a kid, we use to kick up leaves on the ground at night and sometimes we would find some time of fungus that looked like little green sparks of light. We called that foxfire also. I guess it was probably jack-o-lantern mycelium or something similiar.

Next time I find them I'll get pics of them glowing in the dark.

Great, please make some prints too, i would very much like to grow bioluminescent cultures of this species.

You may have to use very long exposures to photograph the luminescence, but do try!
