    #3099443 - 09/06/04 04:45 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

i think that at least one of my rotten possible gym patches turned out to be the jack-o-lantern mushroom

here are pics and description

a. Habitat - edge of a corn field on a rotting tree in michigan
b. Characteristics of the gills - orange, attached to stem, decurrent?
c. Measurements of cap and stem. - large caps, some 6-8"+ i'd guess
d. Characteristics of the stem - mostly solid i think, no evidence of veil
e. Characteristics of the cap - orange, smooth
f. Spore print color - taking one now
g. Color that the mushroom bruises - no noticible bruising
h. Scent of mushroom - unusual, not normal mushroom smell

cap
stem
gills

patch pic 2
patch pic 3

anybody confirm or deny id?

Sorry, this site is temporarily unavailable!
The web site you are trying to access has exceeded its allocated data transfer.

you should compress your pictures so they're quicker to d/l and don't take up so much space.

in any case, the spore print will rule out one or the other (or maybe both :crazy2:  )  when it's done...

DH

I got lucky and got through to the photos. Those sure look like Jack O'Lanterns. As DH mentioned, a spore print will immediately tell you which you have.

The fact that you were able to guess that they were Jack O'Lanterns also tells me that you probably know already that they are very nasty poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!

the gill photo resembels chanterlle more then jack o latern... and I have found both... the way the gills continue onto the stem, and the slight bucket shape of the cap... all jacks I have found di not have this cap feature.... BUT, the way they are growing off the wood, and the cluster they make says to me jacks all the way... perhaps they are different in your neck of the woods...

i left the mushroom i picked on white paper last night and got no print... i think i will go back to the patch today and get another mushroom and try a print on foil or black paper... either way i think gym's are ruled out here as a possibility... i guess i'll keep looking..
