Jack-O-Lanterns in Austin, Texas w/ Pics
    #10393855 - 05/25/09 12:11 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Im Nick, from Austin, Texas.  This is my first official post.  I ran across this site while looking for resources on growing gourmet shrooms to eat.  I thought I would introduce myself and share a story with you.

Last year I was walking around my apartment complex in South Austin, Texas when I came across some cool looking mushrooms.  I went to the internet and positively identified them as Omphalotus olearius or, Jack-O-Lantern mushrooms.  I took them into a dark closet and sure enough, these guys glowed in the dark.  Being a photographer, I felt inclined to capture their luminescence in a photo.  Here are the results.  I think they turned out pretty well.  This site is one heck of a resource.  Thanks to everyone who helps make it possible.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Holy crap, the luminescence in incredible!  That is quite literally one of the very best photos of glowing Omphalotus I have found on the web!

Great work, and welcome to The Shroomery.

Amazing photos, that is the best pic of that species I have seen.

What settings did you use?

Thanks guys.  It surprises me that there are only a handful of available pictures of these things glowing.  Its a pretty awesome sight.  Maybe they are kept for themselves.

Both pictures were taken at 2:50am on 04/10/2008 with a Nikon D200 and a 35mm F2 lens. The darkest place in my house happened to be my bedroom closet so I propped them up on a shelf and used towels and blankets around every crack in the door.  It may sound like overkill but the first shot was ruined because of excess ambient light.

The first (brighter) one was shot at ISO 800 for 47.5 minutes
The second one was shot at ISO 400 for 25 minutes

If you look at the right hand corners of each picture, you can see the effect even the minuscule amount of ambient light had on the pictures.  My biggest complaint about these is the amount of noise that resulted from the high ISO.  I have since gotten a camera upgrade and if I had it to do over again, the pictures would be much better.  Ill keep watching the spot.  Maybe ill get another chance.

I only have a D40. You can absolutely forget any of the high ISO settings with those. :frown:
But then again, I am not a professional photographer and it really suits my needs quite well.

Naw, that doesn't sound like overkill at all.  I cover all sources or light when I'm just looking at them.  Towels or something under the door, cover any little LED lights for sure.  That little extra light really distracts they eye (and I'm sure the lens even more so!).
