The new copy protection functions will come in SP1 which is due out this month. Make a backup before applying SP1 just in case!

Also, it's hilarious to see Microsoft patting themselves on the back because Vista is pirated half as often as XP. They think it's due to their copy protection efforts, but it's actually because Vista sucks. :yesnod:

The so-called "kill switch" is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.

But the tool has suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled.

Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software.

In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said: "Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine copies."

'Take action'

"They won't lose access to functionality or features, but it will be very clear to them that their copy of Window Vista is not genuine and they need to take action."

Microsoft has described the new approach as a "change of tactics". It said efforts to tackle piracy had seen numbers of fake copies of Vista at half the level of XP, the previous Windows operating system.

The change will take effect with the release of Service Pack 1, a major update to Windows Vista.

Customers who buy a copy of Windows Vista or have the operating system (OS) installed when they buy a new PC are required to validate the OS with Microsoft.

An online tool, called Windows Genuine Advantage, checks the authenticity of the OS to determine if it was legally acquired.

The tool can "lock" Vista from further use if it believes it is an unauthorised copy. But many users have complained that the system is not working because legally bought copies result in error messages.

It was introduced in 2006 as voluntary option, but became mandatory with the release of Vista, and had problems from the day it was introduced. Mr Sievert added: "It's worth re-emphasising that our fundamental strategy has not changed.

"All copies of Windows Vista still require activation and the system will continue to validate from time to time to verify that systems are activated properly."

Microsoft said it had pursued legal action against more than 1,000 dealers of counterfeit Microsoft products in the last year and taken down more than 50,000 "illegal and improper" online software auctions.

That would be the fundamental strategy of doing anything and everything, legal or not, to protect the Microsoft Monopoly, yes?

Microsoft has made the most intelligent business decisions over the years. Im sure if you had made the same moves you would not be complaining. Lets just be honest, no one can rival Microsoft because no one knows how.

Not really. As is the case with most monopolies, they got fairly lucky.

I'm not motivated by money. You know nothing about me to be making such a statement.

No one can currently rival Microsoft because Microsoft holds a monopoly. However, their monopoly is slowly being restricted by various governments across the world. As the playing field gets leveled, you will start to see the benefits of competition and the damage the Microsoft has done to the computing industry in the name of profit.

You dont call buying their OS for 35,000 dollars and selling it to IBM for millions is a good business decision while also keeping rights to the OS? Not to mention the GUI they introduced. Not to mention lowballing IBM (a second time) when they were supposed to release OS2 (i believe it was). I think Microsoft is brilliant (or was back in the day). Im all for competition but you have to compete. I dont like monopolies but a company like microsoft will always have one until someone can figure out how to market to the masses. I dont see it happening any time soon and I definately think you are motivated by money. Everyone is. If you werent, you wouldnt have a computer, keyboard, car, job, clothes, food or anything else. Money is the motivating factor in almost every aspect of life. Deny it all you want, you wouldnt turn down billions of dollars by making smart business decisions. Anyone that claims they would is either stupid or lying.

Me thinks vista SP1's copy protection will be broken within a week.

I found out that new toshiba BIOS prevent me from using vista through the BIOS spoofing method. I had to downgrade.

Oh, and I just fixed my xbox 360 with 3RROD error:0102 using lawdawg's method. YAY

The older you get, the less true the above statement becomes. If I were motivated by money, I certainly wouldn't be living in a third world country enjoying rum and cokes on the beach while making 1/20th (literally) of what I could (and was) in the States. I found long ago that enjoying life is much more important than money.

You should really study the history of Microsoft before trying to debate their business practices. The "good, but highly unethical business decision" was realizing that they could take the testbed that had been written to allow them to test applications designed for OS/2 (before OS/2 was running) and market it as a full blown OS (Windows 95), along with a decent application suite, while being paid by IBM to work on OS/2.

This was actually a case of the cart before the horse. One of the developers spent a few weeks merging the testbed with DOS and Windows 3.1 technology, in his spare time. When management saw what he had done, the lightbulb turned on. Again, they got lucky, and were good enough to see the long term potential in screwing over IBM. It wasn't as if they were brilliant and planned it from the beginning. Instead, they won the lottery and invested wisely.
