im about to graft a.myriostigma to an etoliated t.pachanoi

first of all, im very full of confidence.
but...

the myriostigma hasnt grown for over a year, and has lost its root system.

one of my pedros has an etoliated spot, i was gonna remove the top half of it and add the astrophytum myriostigma.

ive grafted before, but not with astrophytum or similar button-like cacti.

ive also seen good results with peyote grafted to trichocereus species, but after viewing the structure of a peyote and the structure of the myriostigma, it seems the myrio might have a harder time taking with its weird shape, as opposed to the peyote which can be cut easier.

in my past ive mainly grafted seedlings.

i also dont have a razor big enough to cut the myrio, should i use a very sharp kitchen knife? i have some VERY sharp butcher type blades that i could just HACK with. i understand crushing the material over a clean cut would be bad, but im just trying to consider alternate options here!

its also getting quite cold here, and even though ive moved them inside into the warm, they probably arent at their peak of growth, will this be a problem? the myriostigma will most likely dry out and shrivel up if it does not grow in the next few months, and winter is only getting worse.

any advice or guidance would rock.

grafting is always better when the stock plant and the scion are in full growth mode.
thinner blades are better than thicker, but a very sharp kitchen knife can work...

i cut the bottom of the astrophytum off with a small razor, very carefully, and all the columns fell apart................


WTF?

the inside was orangish-cream, and the center scion was dark brown.
i think it may have been a bit too dry already anyways!

oh well, it was worth a try, and now i have a pedro tip to plant, and some pedro pups to look forward to!

i decided after the failure that i might graft a mammallaria magnimamma on there instead. it looks good. i have some myriostigma seedlings popping up now, so ill give those a go on peresk and not feel so bad.

i have plenty of pedros, and some bridgesii and torch around. and i just planted fishhook barrel cactus, more torch, and some myriostigmas, so ill be looking forward to some crazy grafting coming soon here. ive got jungles and oogles of peresk.

Your graft doesn´t looks very good.
You should have grafted way up on the rootstock, and a smaller part of the TOP of the scion.

im sorry i dont get what u mean, graft the mamm above the etoliated area?

cause i had already sliced my pedro before i cut the myriostigma, and the myrio went and fell apart so i thought, why waste this pedro scion?

top of the scion? wouldnt that be the tip of the cactus?

i still dont understand...

the scion on the mamm was smaller in circumference than that of the scion on the pedro. therefore the graft should work.

the only thing that worries me is that the mamm is putting out quite a lot of milky juice. the flesh inside a mammallaria is bright magenta :smile:

i decided to cut the mamm close to the roots, so if it fails i will still have room to try again.

the graft is also positioned odd on the top and not "straight" on from these views, but whats important is that i lined up the scions, so it "should" take.

time will tell.

and if u could explain what u meant by the smaller part of the top of the scion, cause that doesnt make sense - which scion of which cactus?

there is only one "scion" meaning the top part... the pedro is the "stock"

i was just informed that a scion is a detatched plant or twig.

for the longest time i thought the center growth - the woody circular column and its insides - of a cactus was the "scion" of the cactus. i read this in botany. i was also instructed to refer to it as such.

what is this center part called then?

cause that is what ive always lined up, and what ive always been told was the backbone and heart of the cactus' growth. the part which has been explained to me to be the "scion".

and felix, i cut the mamm less than a centimeter above the roots coming out of it. any lower on the cactus would have had roots around the edges of the mamm cut, touching the cut part of the pedro - due to having to line up the center growth and it not being "straight" with the structure of the pedro, would that be ok?

its the vascular rings that u should be lining up, or overlapping if they differ in size.



the very centre is the core, the vascular ring surrounds the core.
