He probably thought that if he showed up at all of these events that Ron Paul's supporters dominate, and laid down his money in an effort to weaken the expression of Ron Paul's support, it might diminish Paul's campaign.

Why would he panic about that? Because he knows that Ron Paul is seriously threatening his chances. The one advantage he has over Ron Paul is his money. Ron Paul is starting to get more media attention than Mitt Romney because of Ron Paul's movement.

Perhaps it is evident that it doesn't matter how CNN tries to portray Ron Paul at their debate, because it doesn't really matter in terms of the primaries.
