Dvd conversion

Ok,I had asked a question before about taking video from a 8 mm tape video camera to a computer and found out that without some pricey equipment or a new camera it wasn't really possible. I have now transferred the footage onto a dvd from a vcr Dvd dubbing thing and have a dvd with the footage i'm trying to get on my computer. is there any computer program taht will rip the footage into a workable video file for my computer such as an mpeg? My computer will play the dvd off of the dvd-r but when I look at the files on the disk they aren't really in a format that I consider workable or that I understand. Any help? five shrooms to anyone that can point me in the right direction
