That's the one I used to use back in the day. It was good then, but I haven't ripped a dvd in ages.

win x dvdripper kept asking me to buy platinum because otherwise it would'nt copy a protected file.

dvddecrypter looks likew it'll work even tho it froze two times. now I got a bunch of .bup .ifo and .vob files, I guess I just select them all when I'm ready to burn it to dvd??

btw thanks to everyone for the suggestions

You can also try AppGeeker DVD Ripper, its extremely fast and it can convert DVDs TO TO all most all the formats.

http://www.appgeeker.com/convert/rip-dvd-to-mp4-mac.html

I have used this in the past and works well.

Yeah you need a blu-ray burner to burn blu-rays. This discs are expensive though I think.

Why would you copy it as an ISO? The state of the files on the disc is a bunch of files inside a folder called VIDEO_TS and the disc can be copied to the computer in this exact fashion. In fact, if the DVD does not have copy protection, you can just put the disc in your computer and copy and paste the files to your computer.

Re: good program to copy dvds [Re: s240779]

Additionally, on a DVD, a video file has a limit of .99 GB -- there are multiple .99 GB files (that's close to 1 GB, by the way) and these files make up the movie. And of course the maximum capacity of the whole DVD is between 4 and 9 gigabytes, depending on whether the disc is dual layer or not. So, the movie is split into several parts -- several .99 GB files and a final file that can vary in size (i.e. .34 GB) that contains the last part of the movie. Of course, this splitting of files does not affect viewing at all. Why are they split up? I don't know. It's DVD protocol. What I want to point out is that DVD video is actually MPEG-2 -- that's the file type. When the files are split up, they are VOB files. All the VOBs can be merged into a single MPEG-2 file -- your movie will be a single file. And this merging process does not recompress the movie. I have a program that can do this merging. But you can't have a DVD menu or optional subtitles when it's in a single file.

Sounds to me like it's more convenient than downloading, plus higher quality, generally.

More convenient than downloading?  I can have a movie downloaded before you get your shoes on to go to the store.

Maybe he wants to copy the entire dvd including all the extras onto a blank dvd disk to enjoy later on his dvd player? I don't know. I just gave suggestion he may find useful.

Copying the VIDEO_TS folder will copy the extras. It is the whole of the DVD. A DVD-R burned from a copied VIDEO_TS folder will be the exact same thing as the original DVD.

You can use another program to decrypt and rip the movie to the hard drive first, e.g. DVD Decrypter for DVDs. I don't recall offhand what I used for Blu-ray but it's the same idea.

DVD Decrypter is the one I'm familiar with, I have heard it's no longer in development but I never encountered a movie it wasn't able to rip. I don't do huge amounts of dvd ripping though.

I'm not just talking about copy & paste, which as I said, works fine for DVDs that don't have copy protection. Copying the VIDEO_TS folder is also the standard procedure for decrypting programs.

ISO files are generally used by geeks, from what I understand, and usually for software, not for DVDs.

They're used by geeks?  ISO's are pretty much the standard as far as disk images go, I'd say their usage is pretty widespread.  If you download any copy of Windows / software for Windows you often get an ISO.

Those don't appear to be free.

I borrowed MIB3 and ripped it using DVD decryptor then encoded it for my ipad using handbrake. I think DVD decryptor failed on some other dvds.

ISO files aren't just for geeks anymore. You can rip dvds to iso and mount and watch them from a virtual drive. Lets see you do that with a ts_video folder.
