straw flushes
    #767203 - 07/22/02 11:52 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

i just read that straw only gives one good flush. is this true? i have been using straw with a few different strains, they have all been good sized shrooms but only about 5 mature and about 5 abhorts. and i dont get much more after that. i thought it was just something i was doing. so does staw have good flushes and more than one? thanks

i'm using about 3 in sub to 1/2 in coir in bread pans. i get about 5 mature ones around 15-20 grams a piece so about 75-100 g wet. then i get mabe two shrooms more on the next flush. but then i get nothing but little shitty thing not worth much from there.

Yeah, plain straw ain't much of a substrate! Adding manure or meaure compost to the straw will make you wet your pants when you see the results.

You can even leave it uncased, and then just case it with some coir after the first flush. And then wait for a second and third yummy flush

thanks guys!!! i thought i was just doing something wrong. i have been trying not to use the poo. the ol lady dont mind that i am addicted to this new hobby even when she walked into the garage while i was mowing some staw laid out on the floor. wow!! u should have seen the straw fly!! but she aint to hip to the poo thing, we just wont tell her, ok. i have read the debate about store bought manure, if its organic and i mix it with straw will that be ok? and u said composted manure, i can buy that also at like lowes right? man i am pumped now. i got about a dozen eq in the incubator now about 50% colinized. cant what till they are done, something new to try. any recommendations on brand name. i will go to some stables and get some poo if i have to, just dont want to lay it out and dry it and all that. thanks

Yeah, just go to Lowes and get manure compost....something without added fungicide or other nasties. Check the labels.

It doesn't smell like poo! It's a really earthy smell. She won't know the difference from potting soil, probably ;-)

And, yes, just mix manure compost with some straw. You could even leave the straw out, but a little extra straw is always nice in my humble opinion.

Oh, and manure compost is preferable to plain manure anyways...you don't have to buffer it, and it's a richer mix of organics providing all the essential nutrients your shroomies will want.

Horse or cow manure would be preferable. Worm castings are very delicate and compact very easily.

I've repeatedly gotten 5+ flushes off of plain straw. The keys seem to be

large masses of it, 1+ sq. foot trays 4-6 in deep vs. small pans.

High spawn rates! This seems to be the most important. Use grains not verm based substrates, and lots of it. Grain is just more food per volume and gives the straw the boost it needs. The more spawn you use with straw, the more flushes you get without having to deal with additives like poo and castings.

Deep casing layers. 1/2 bare minimum. I wouldn't even do straw with only that little. at least 3/4 in or more depending on straws depth. 1.5 in of a fast colonizing mix (like 80/20 coir/verm + lime) isn't too much for 6 inch deep beds.

These tips should help plain straw fruit repeatedly and prolificly. Good luck.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

straw gives some of the best flushs. Use finer shredded straw so you can back more straw per square inch. Also increase your depth to 4-5 in and you will have huge and large flushs.
