Hey everyone,
How fast does myclium convert oxygen into carbon dioxide? Are there any actually numbers or is it just best guess?
Thanks Fd

Really?!?! **Scratches his head looking very stupid**
Then why do you fann? And why do people always say there is CO2 that need to be removed.
Forgive my reoccuring stupidity, Fd

Because CO2 is a byproduct of mycelium decomposing the substrate. But they don?t CONVERT oxygen to CO2...

i would say they are, i mean its just cellular respiration...same as all other organisms, they need oxygen as an acceptor molecule for the final step of oxidative phosphorilation and as a by product CO2 is given off...are you saying they are anerobic or something? i mean they dont covert it directly, but that is the net result...

Although, as far I know, mycelium is aerobic, but not to the extent humans are.....
I looked in the internet, but haven?t found real data how exactly fungi decompose the materials...
Who can tell me?

then why poke holes in jars? to let CO2 out? i thought CO2 was beneficial to mycellia growth.. also some one posted a while ago about using some chemical to pull CO2 out of the air, cant remember what.....maybe this would work, a way to keep himidity high and CO2 low...

>then why poke holes in jars?
To inoculate through the holes with the needle of the spore syringe?

not sure what you mean by real data, but most fungi excrete enzymes (many different kinds) into the surrounding substrate which initiates extracellular digestion. They in turn use a variety of physio-mechanical methods to absorb the (now) much smaller food molecules directly into the cells. This is what happens during the run phase when the mycelium has not produced fruiting bodies yet. Almost all fungi are aerobic chemoheterotrophs so they do require oxygen to grow and reproduce, but CO2 is not there carbon source for synthesis of complex molecules. They just tend to be much more tolerant of higher CO2 concentrations than us mammals. Sorry that's all I can accurately recall right now.

By "real data" i mean like studies or something along those lines. Thanks for explaining that to me! Fd

damn that was a real fuckin stoner question... i think what i meant to ask is why do some people not tape the holes after innoculation, (i tape, although some people say it stalls them)

jeez. the only time that lids should not be tapped from day on to the the birthday is for the one minute that it takes to inoculate the four holes. after thats done tape the holes again. if you want air exchange, so im told by a freind, unscrew the lid just enough that it is not air tight. air born contams cant fall through an open hole. its hard for something to creep in from underneath between the glass threads and lid. I hope. well my friend has had success with that. Tape the god damn holes man!

Its not tapped its taped, they mean different things. The lids dont have to be taped at all! None of the pro's tape the lids, all the awsome grow logs dont have any pics with tape on the jar.
There is no reason for tape, if you want to keep it contam free just spray some lysol inbetween the lid and the foil that goes over it, i do and i have a 0:18 contam:none record.
Unscrewing the jars a little bit is just taking an unnessesary risk, the jars are fine just as they are!
Leave em' alone any they will work fine, mess with them and something is bound to go wrong sooner or later... Fd
