what is a tie-bar? (engineering question)
    #7611059 - 11/08/07 12:47 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm studying some mechanical engineering stuff

I have a question that is about "two lengths of flat tie-bar that are connected together by a lap riveted joint, with 3 rivets 10mm in diameter"

what the hell is a tie bar? I've did a search but not found what I'm looking for, a picture or example would be good so i can see what it looks like.

thanks

well, by looking at the word im assuming it's a piece of metal that connects, or "ties", things together.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_tie_bar

there's an example with a car. However, this is just a guess.

yeah, I've seen that but i can't really think of how it would pertain to the question in my book.

the question is:
Two lengths of flat tie bar are connected together by a lap riveted joint with three rivets each 10mm in diameter. Calculate the maximum pull that can be applied to the tie-bars if the shear stress in the rivets is not to exceed 60MN/m^2

This made the dogs in my head start barking furiously. Also:

Do a Google Images search of "lower tie bar" to see many more results. Hope that helps.

thanks for the help, but i'm still stuck with it, i guess i know what a tie-bar is now but i don't see how two could be connected together with 3 rivets

The 3 rivets come into place when you have a bridged lower support tie bar. Take the 2 rivets at the end with the rod, cut it in half, then add another rivet in between the split rod that bolts to a different support anchor.

you guys are barking up the wrong tree, it a reference to structural steel in buildings and shit, not automotive strut tower stiffening, the purpose is the same
different design and application

if I were on the computer at work I could post a few pics, it's basicly just a
means of stiffening and squaring corners and connections between I-beams,
generally the grade of steel used is A36, you'll find info in shear forces
through google
