small growroom size hepa setup

anyone know of a source for a small, maybe portable hepa setup that would semi-sterilize a closet sized growroom. Ive been researching on the net and they only seem to have setups for a whole house sized area. Of course the prices on those things are waay too much, I'd buy a pro flowhood before laying down the cash for one of those. Just looking for a relatively cheap solution, so any feedback appreciated

Check out any major department stores, Builders Square or Ace Hardware. They all carry small room type Hepa filters from $40 & up. The little ones are not much larger than a 6 pack of bee & run quiet. Line the walls, ceiling, floor & back of door w/plastic, disinfect it & go for it. SixTango

hepa filters do not sterilize, they only filter, and many of the small hepa filters which you find in shops are rather ineffective at doing what they claim to do. A recent edition of Consumer Reports tested home hepa filters, and they were all outperformed by an electrostatic unit (which, incidentally has no lower limit on effective particle size). I do not remember the model or mfg, but you can find the magazine yourself. If your not using this as a laminar flow hood filter, then this is perfect for what you want.

What size room are you planning on using? I bought a hepa filter and ionizer in one to day from walmart. It's by a company called Holmes and is made for a 10' X 11' X 8' room or 880 cubic feet. All for the bargain price $37.00. Just a little FYI for you.

Those filters do not do a very good job filtering the air.
They are fine for a generally cleaner environment, but in comparison to a proper flow hood hepa they are exceptionally weak. Many are not properly sealed, and as such leak dirty air into the clean airstream. There is a cood consumer grade filter comparison in a recient consumer reports. For industrial grade stuff look up info on clean rooms (level 10 or even 100 would be very nice.. .. however a little beyond my budget).

i was thinking one could constuct a filtering system using a box fan. one could secure one of those 3M HEPA filters from Walmart to the front and a furnace filter to the back. air would be sucked in through the furnace filter..filtering out big stuff..and then blown out the HEPA... does anyone think this is a good idea? would it work?

In a word, no.
not even close to enough static pressure, unless you are talking about one beastly box fan.
Read the section on hepa filtration in GGMM or TMC, it will lay out all the basics for you.

I use the aforementioned small Holmes $40 hepa filter/ionizer. I've heard ionizers suck in general because by ionizing the particles they just cause them to stick all over the surface of your environment, filter, etc. This may cause your downstream air to become dirtier as it noticeably sticks all over the surface of the filter housing where it is first ionized. So I don't use the ionizer.

I've done several dozen agar and grain transfers in the direct air flow of this little hepa filter and I've had an extremely low contamination rate: 1 petri dish and 2 grain jars. During the cold-ass winters where I live, 0 contamination rate. This may change as the filter gets older and accumulates more crap, but the beauty of these things is that you can break them apart, clean and sterile the assembly and put in a brand new filter for $12.

I do this in my enclosed dirty ass kitchen, first cleaning, sweeping, mopping, etc, all while running the filter. Then I shower, wear a dust mask, spray down my surface with isopropyl, and quickly do my transfers in the direct air flow.

For my grow room, I bought two $40 5-shelf stackable plastic utility shelves and some thick plastic sheeting from home depot. I stacked the shelves 4 high on the sides and used the two remaining shelves to stack between them, forming a C shape: |_| Something like that. Then I wrapped the whole thing in plastic like a big-ass present, took a box cutter, and cut myself a door in two cuts to step into, like this: -| I fasten the outside with velcro to keep the bottom corner closed. On the back bottom side of the room (opposite the door), I cut a small window the size of my hepa filter intake and run all my cords through here as well. The hepa filter runs all day creating positive pressure which pushes the air out the cracks in my makeshift door. Every once in a while, I spray the whole inside down with isopropyl or diluted bleach, usually between growing cycles.

I built the whole room in my basement and ran a light bulb to a 12 hour timer outside and directly above the room. In the winter, I use a cheap ass steam humidifer floating in a trash can full of water to humidify and warm the room. It is somewhat too effective but the mushies love it, just gets a little too wet in there. Turning it off for a while allows the hepa filter to dry it out pretty quickly. I was too lazy to put the humidifier on a timer as well. In the summer, I've tried something new. Instead of leaving the trays out in the open on the shelves, I've placed them on soaked perlite inside aquariums, ice chests, whatever I've got, then saran wrap the tops with small cracks to keep the humidity in but also allow for some amount of air exchange. Every once in while I air them out. They seem to love it.

Even in my spider infested, dirty ass basement, contamination has not been that much of a problem. Most of my contam has come from careless casing prep, but I've gotten better at that. Placing everthing in aquariums seems to help a great deal as well.

Not the most perfect setup, I agree, but it's damn cheap and highly effective for what I'm trying to accomplish.
