Yea it's mostly old men that play around with these things. But I find myself quite addicted to it.
Anyone else into Model Aviation?
I've got a small collection going but eventually I want to get something like this: /
Looks like hella fun.

Have you seen the one where some guy built a B-52 replica using 4 or 6 microturbines and crashed it on his test flight? Dude spent a fortune and a couple years building I think.
Edit: Here we go...

Ha, yea I saw that one. He actually built two of them and crashed them both. But the other crash wasn’t filmed. Word has it that in the other crash the entire rear stabilizer catastrophically failed and completely broke off of the plane.
They barred this guy from making any more airplanes because they claim he doesn’t know what the fuck he's doing. But in my personal opinion, I think he did a good job. Take a look at this vid of a real B52, they are known to stall at high bank so I think his model proved to be vary scale in nature. He just wasn’t aware of how level you have to keep the airplane. Some argue that you can’t pull a b52 out of a spin at any altitude.
The crashes look virtually identical, what I don’t think his opposers are considering, is the fact that maybe it's harder to fly a B52 than they think it is.

They're going to compare a guy flying a jet with 8 microturbines on it to somebody flying a balsawood plane with a weed-whacker engine in it? Insane.
My grandpa is an aviation nut. Built a few of his own small planes and founded the experimental aircraft association in his hometown. When he went to the nursing home he gave us all of his old RC planes. He had about 25 or 30 in various stages of construction. Some built with engines in and ready to go. Some in need of an engine. Some without wings. Unfortunately my little brother sold them all on ebay before I could get my hands on some. They all looked like a Cessna and the biggest one had a wingspan of 5 feet.
It's a hobby I've wanted to get into for a while but at this point in my life I don't have the time, money, or space to do it.

Ha, I see your point but the plane in the first vid had a 342cc engine!!!
I don’t know if you’d control that weed whacker or if it’d control you!!!
Jets are sweet too, but there’s a lot of money tied up in those things. I don’t think I could ever afford to get into it.
Maybe they just need to see more crashes, and devistated faces!

I've built 2 from scratch, I'm not really into flying them though. But I will build more.

I started with a helicopter outfitted with a wireless cam. Never flew the damn thing for more than 15 seconds at a time. Spent an hour at the work bench for every 5 minutes of flight. Tossed the pieces in a box the last crash where the still sit. Bought a $40.00 plane from walmart and flew it until I finally got bored with it.
An ultralight is still a dream I have. If it ever comes true it will not be a helicopter type.
