Martial Arts
    #7486359 - 10/04/07 10:26 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Anyone else here enjoy martial arts? What style do you train? How long have you been training? Any sparring/fighting experience?

I've been training Hung Ga for 3 years. Recently I took a 3 month break though and I just started again tonight. It's a Southern Chinese style, the english name is usually Tiger Crane, but Hung Ga in literal terms means "Red Clan".

I really enjoy martial arts, it helps my parkour too. Gives you alot of discipline. I noticed on my 3 month break that I was having alot more trouble waking myself up, and forcing myself to do things.

Yeah I was doing just a general kung fu for about a year though had to stop because of my bad knees. I loved it because it gave you a all round workout of flexibility, strength, endurance and general discipline.

I would love to go back at some stage and would highly recommend martial arts to anyone who is looking to get fit because unlike going to the gym which is hell expensive and quickly gets boring, it tends to stay interesting and relevant. although its best to stay clear of some of the more commercial schools as they tend to be "pay us for so long and we will give you this belt"

Yeah I hate those mc dojos. I also sometimes get knee problems from horse stance if I don't stretch 'em on a regular basis. I hate the feeling though.

I've yet to ever find a legitimate Tae Kwon Do school. But I would like to find an authentic Korean guy and learn from him.

I started with shaolin kung fu around 13 and started studying various fighting styles from there. I`ve amalgamated so many styles together, I have my own martial art. You could consider it jeet kune do if you want. I`m heavily influenced by chin na, ba gua, drunken monkey, wing chun, jeet kune do, brazilian street fighting, pressure point fighting, thai chi and Aikido.

Its more religion or philosophy and physical/spiritual training for me, I hardly fight but continue to learn and train even though I could beat everybody senseless as is. I doubt i`ll have beef with a dojo of skilled martial artists. Usually fights are with inexperienced punks far below my skill level. Its just an art to me and I see beauty in breaking peoples shit.

i used to do parkour
for about a year
but i got lazy and quit
its such a great way to get fit and expand your mind though
the problem i had was that i hated training alone in public, it feels wierd and i become acutely self-conscious, so i would only attend training meets.
vaulting and running is so fun though
and wall-climbs are so satisfying once they become fast and fluid
pkto.ca for any toronto or ontario peoples

I mainly a shotokan karate guy. I got my brown belt, but didn't carry it further, which is stupid of me. I'm looking to get back into it and get that black belt.

I've also been training a bit with jujitsu/mma grappling.

Martial arts is awesome stuff though.

There is a legitimate Tae Kw-on Dojo in Blacksburg, Virginia. And although the instructor is not a Korean guy, he did train under one IN Korea for a number of years before coming back to the states. Personally, I don't care for Tae Kw-on Do, I've studied Judo(Black belt), and Karate(Third degree Black belt), and I'm currently studying Brazilian Jujitzu(Brown belt). I'm really interested in the style of Combat Ki, but I can't find an instructor within a reasonable distance.
