Self Taught Martial art.

My girlfriend and I have started a regiment of exercise and healthier eating.
Plus neither of us drink coffee or soda. Just tea and water.
To my point. I have been scouring the internet looking for info on many different styles of martial arts from many different countries. Everyone seems to think that knowledge and understanding has to be bought. I myself do not believe this.
Can someone point me in the direction of learning and self teaching myself a form of martial art.
I am really looking for help in what exercises to do to help ones self in strengthening the power of a punch/kick. And into understanding Chi on a higher level.

I studied kung fu for several years without ever paying a cent, it only took me getting my ass kicked by a 9 year old (I was 17) for his dad to start teaching me
you can find instructional videos all over the net that will help you become aquainted with various styles, it may help with learning but nothing compares to an actual teacher, regardless practice freequently and work on refining what you learn, develop a 'dance' routine and build on that. having a partner is a benefit
good luck

if you want to develop strong quick punches look into Bruce Lee's Fighting Methods. He has alot of practical excercises to increase power in striking, and some really interesting philosophy behind fighting too.
But yea, if you want to learn any real system I think you should find a good instructor. There's not really any substitute for being in the presence of someone who has devoted their life to the art.

Thanks for the wise words.
My girl is just as interested as me in learning. I just feel it would be hard to have her as a sparring partner .
The small town I am in only has 1 type of fighting "kajukimbo" ? or something of the sort. I have talked to a few people that attend and does not seem like my type of training.

I studied several books on various martial arts for a couple of years before choosing to engage in serious training in Tae Kwan Doe. Despite the fact that a great deal of the ideology and technique had already been exposed to me having a real master of the art train me showed me that you truly must be an understudy.
Good start on conditioning your body, tho.

i read bruce lee's book when i was a child and held on to all of it. It's a beautiful book. And you should go out into the woods, run up slopes, do push ups on your fists and punch trees. everyday.

those are all verry effective styles. however, they are styles that require verry exacting technique to be effective in combat. if you attempt to learn these without proper instruction, there is a good chance you will develop incorrect forms and application, rendering much of your practice, useless.
I would advise that you pick up something basic, like american boxing, then practice yer accuracy and power untill you are inspired to find a good instructor, and advance further..
just my .02
Peace, bub.
