PCing Spawn bags?
    #747445 - 07/15/02 07:30 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I recently got some autoclavable spawn bags from the Sporeworks (great vendor) and I want to sterilize soem rye in the spawn bags. Now my question is if I seal the bags with the impulse sealer before or after PCing. If I seal it before PCing can the bag break while in my PCer?

I think that sporeworks had a brief FAQ on how to do it. I have heard that some people will fold the bag over and clothespin it shut, place some cardboard down on the bottom of the cooker and, depending on the size of your spawnbag place 1-3 in the middle AWAY from the walls and not touching any metal. I imagine that some cardboard could be cut out and laid on top of the bag if you were concerned with blockage/gluing your bag to the top of the cooker. Seal after p-cook.

We seal the bags before sterilisation and put the rack on top to prevent them from blocking the steam valve.

As the bags are autoclaved they swell, but since they all do, none of them will get big enough to burst. A single bag in a large cooker would probably burst.

We've done many bags like this and have encountered no problems like crack or leaks.

After sterilisation the bags can be inoculated by piering the plastic with a needle. The hole can be taped or shut with a glue gun.

I have a small 6 quart PCer and I can prolly fit 2 bags nicely snuggled in there with one another. If I gt as much air as possible out of them as I can and then PC them by folding them like in the Sporeworks Tek could they burst with such little space if I seal them prior to PCing them?
