Homemade spawn bags and Cheap sealer
    #989691 - 10/24/02 03:38 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

OK so I, like so many other people, don't have alot of money to spend on a impulse sealer and I am an impatient person so I don't like to order things from vendors if I think I can make them myself or find them somewhere close. This tek is to teach you how to make your own spawn bags and how to seal them very inexpensivly. No need for an impulse sealer.

I went out shopping yesterday and picked us some foodsaver bags (Tillia Foodsaver, that vacuum sealing machine on all of those infomercials) and turkey sized oven bags. I am going to be testing the oven bags later tonight, I will post how it goes.

Here is the Tek.

Materials
Tillta Foodsaver or similar bags (I bought the 11in x 18ft roll)
Iron
Micron Magick Filters or similar (optional)
(simple eh)

Procedure
Take you Iron and set it to the silk setting if you are using the Tillia bags, if not you may have to play with the heat settings. Cut to desired size and place on a hard, flat surface with a towel or something underneath.
Press iron on the bag for 5 seconds and remove. If your heat setting is right the iron will not stick to the bag, if it does the heat is too high. Practice making it nice if you want. A test to see how tight your seals are, is to seal one side of a bag, then seal the other 3/4 of the way. Blow some air into the bag and seal it off completely.  Fill up you sink with water and submerge the bag and squeeze it to see if you have any air leaks. If not you have done good.
  Thats it.
I will be experimenting with placing filters on the bags. I have some Micron Magick Filter Disks laying around so I am going to play with them until I can get a good filter patch. I will also post that when I figure something out.

Untill then have fun and don't burn yourself.

Try placing a sheet of paper between the iron and the plastic to avoid sticking. I have an impulse sealer so I haven't tried it, but others report that it works.

Una posted awhile back about using a short piece of tubing (plastic hot water pipe or large diameter syringe cut to length) that you thread the open end of the bag into and fold over. Secure with a rubber band. Then stuff the bag lined tube with polyfil and cap with foil. Then you don't need a sealer at all. I have tried this and it works

I read that somewhere. I had a friend that used polyfill alot, it seemed like nothing but drama. He used it with his jars though and 90% of the time he would get Trichoderma infections in the jars. I will try the paper thing though, let everone know how it goes. Thanks Workman for the input

Btw I tried to seal the oven bags, they werent having it. the material is too thin, it doesnt seal well. I am going to continue to keep trying until I find something that works.

I use polyfil in all my jars and its rare if I see any sort of contamination. You do have to pack it very tightly to be a proper barrier to airborne contamination but it does work.

problem with the iron i would say is that you have to warm it up... but it does work.. but i dont know where my iron is.... there are possibilities that there is uneven sealing and some seals maybe weaker... it probly would be hard to put filter patches but somehow i dont think thats what your aiming for... iron is not percise to melt a small filter in the middle of the bag without melting whole bag unless useing a ironing board.... hrmm... for those who dont have a iron.... how much does a new one cost?

i was thinking about alternative bag material.. in home depot they sell 6mil plastic bags.. but they only withstand up to 215f.... thats not good enough... but it would be a cheap way to make a giant bag... 250 square feet of 6 mil sheeting for about 12 bucks.. yeah.. thats cheap...

In reply to:

I have used polyfil with the foodsaver product and absolutely no problems
have been encountered. Simply make a small hole in the bag with either a
hole punch or heated tool, take a wad of polyfil and carefully insert into hole
making certain tension is equal on both sides of bag (after polyfil is inserted),
and after pc'ng the substrate (while the bags are still warm) packing tape can
be used to cover the outer polyfil (puncturing the tape with a sterilized needle
numerous times, to allow sufficient air flow).

Keep in mind, too large of a hole allows too much air, subsequently drying out
the substrate before colonization. Instead of wasting the bag, use clear
packing tape as suggested above.

Good luck. Keep it simple is the best advice I can give.

 Sweet! Glad to see it works! The only thing is I wish it was an original idea. I thought it was. Oh well. Mabey I will use the polyfill. Did you put some kind of plastic over it? Oh nevermind I just read the bottom of your post. Good going man.
Thanks for the replies guys

To come up with an "original" idea, you would
have to reinvent the world.

The food saver machine is worth purchasing. You
get an impulse sealer and vacuum packer in one.
It does save $ in food expenses.

Oh wow, I love the polyfil in the bags method. Covering the wad with clear tape and then poking holes in it over the polyfil wad is brilliant. Perfect control over how much air gets in by adjusting the number and size of holes. Even better than the plastic tube with a polyfil center idea. Why didn't I think of that?

I'm giving Peaceful_Nomad 5 stars.

Thanks Workman ~ When using the Foodsaver bags
the side seams need to be reinforced with an additional
seal(s), as they tend to split during the PC'ng.

Additionally, the bags (cut to gallon size) will easily fit
in a standard size PC (laying flat). It is important to
not use a metal rack to keep the bags out of the water,
as the metal will melt the bags (sides of the PC won't
melt the bags). Some small ceramic or glass condiment
dishes inverted in the bottom of the PC work well at
keeping the bags out of the water.

Peace to Everyone,

Peaceful Nomad

How much do the bags run you, and the sealer? Also did you ever attempt to grow the shrooms out in the bags, like the MycoBAgs?

Thanks for the info.

Great work.

What em_bre_o said.

No... About 2 quarts of spawn is produced per bag and is better
utilized in colonizing a bulk substrate.

Here are some pics of the process of filling and pc'ng the bags:
(Sorry for the blurry quality. Camera is old and pics vary in
quality)

Bag is double sealed on 3 sides and polyfill filter inserted through
hole made with hole punch in top of bag.

Bag is filled about halfway... Approx 2 quarts

Bag is double sealed on top, ready to load into pc.

2 bags are loaded into pc, suspended above the water with
condiment dishes. Using a metal rack will melt the bag, but the
edges touching the pc do not melt.

After all the pressure has been released from the pc, the bags
are removed to cool in fridge for a couple of hours.

If the bags are allowed to sit in the water, the seals are most likely
to fail.
(Condiment dishes used to keep bags out of water)

Hope this information is of some use. I find using the homemade mycobags to
be far easier than jars. Once you get the hang of producing spawn this way,
grain to grain tranfers become second nature.

Peace to Everyone,

Peaceful Nomad

a fairly reliable impulse sealer can be had on eBay for pretty cheap. Here's a link to a couple that I have seen used before.
