PMP humidity low!
    #7451089 -

ive noticed the PMP i just made isnst really keeping the humidity up. itstays at about 90% using my reptile gauge. i have a 27 gallon container with weather stripping to keep it in. I drilled (2) 5/8th inch holes at the top in the back stuffed with pollyfill for air exchange. Also have 2 ten inch bubble stones and 1 small bubble stone under the rock.

shouldnt my humidity be higher?

also are (2) 5/8 holes enough for FAE

I'm in the process of building my PMP right now. Trying to do something different than the ole' Shotgun FC. Anyways, do you think your reptile gauge may possibly be off? Has it ever been calobrated or can you even calobrate those. Did you have that gauge in a previous FC that read higher levels of RH? I also have two 14" bubble stones, WalMart didn't have the bubble wands. Did you mean two 10" bubble stones (what you typed was 2 2ten inch....)? Could be that you need longer stones/wands. I'm gonna go to another WalMart and look for the wands since they are lower profile. Also, the two 5/8" holes at the top of the tub should be enough for FAE. The guy who came up with the PMP (Magash I think) says that's whay he uses and has worked just fine for him. That's whay I plan on doing to mine. Have the supplies, just have to put it together tonight. Is the polyfil necessary since there is sufficient air flow going out of the holes to keep contams from coming in? I'm not sure, but may do it myself just to be safe. How deep is your level of rock/water? One more thing, how long have you let it run? Sometimes it can take 2-3 hours for the RH to reach the desired level. Good luck bro...

My PmP stayed dry (when i used one a few years back), when i discovered that the air pump was running 24/7,
I believe it was ohmatic, in #cultivation chat, that explained to me that the air shouldn't be exchanging constantly, that rH built while the air wasn't running, so, I put the air pump on a timer, every three hours it came on for 25 mins (this was calculated by volume to be sure a full air exchange was being made), once it turned off, it went back to building humidity, and my PmP did great after that.

good luck!

maybe in the future check out ohmatic's monotub tek, negate the use of a pmp and go a bit more bulk.

happy growing!

Other than maybe you're gauge isn't working/reading properly, it looks like you've got everything else set up right! I've got a couple of cheapo digital temp/hum gauges from WalMart. They seem to work ok, but also sometimes it seems like they get stuck on 99%. I've got some analog hydrometers ordered and on the way. Should be much better. One more thing, you say you've got a 27 gallon (108qt) tub. Mine tubs that I am using are 64qt sterilites and have had no problem keeping the RH in upper 90's in my Shotguns. Maybe the ten inch stones are enough for the bigger tub you are using? Just a thought.

Here's something that I decided to do for my PMP. I bought some weather stripping and put along the top edge of my tub. These tubs don't always have a good seal around the top. When I put this stripping on and the close the green latches on the side of my tub, it creates a nice seal. This way I don't have to lay a book or some other kind of weight on top of the tub. Maybe you could give this a try and see if it helps make a good seal to keep humidity in. Or I guess you could use a book if you needed to. Oh yeah, did you say if you have used your reptile gauge before in some other kind of FC? Couldn't remember if had or not, and if so, how did it work?

Jeetered...hey bro, what kind of timer did you use? I was at Lowes last night looking at some different kinds. I don't really think they had exactly what I need. However, I did buy one that looks like a round dial that you plug into an outlet in the wall. The timer itself has an outlet in the side of it that you plug whatever you are using into. It has 24 on/off settings. I was wondering if I could use that to control my airpump? I know that this timer can be used to turn on/off appliances, lights, heaters, etc... so I'm thinking that maybe it will work. Let me know what ya think. Thanks!

THat is eXACTLY what i used!!!

so yeah, i'd get that. You CAN use the rubber seal like the guy posted above you, but, it's just easier to put the air pump on a timer.

just have the on/off set up to come on for about a half hour every 3 hours. (unless you have some huge ass PmP)

Jeetered...thanks! I went ahead and bought one of those timers last night for $8.50 at Lowes. Was gonna get another one but wanted to make sure if that was the right thing first. I haven't even opened it to see how it works. Can you tell me what settings you used or schedule you had it programmed for? I'm not using a huge PMP. Mine is the one in the pic above where I posted about the weather stripping. It's a 64qt Sterilite tub. I've got two Shotgun's working right now, but just want to try something new! As far as putting casings in the PMP, is that ok. Will the containers block out too much of the air flow for the RH? Could you maybe put the casings on some kind of meshed wire that is foled down on the ends to make like a little platform for the casings to sit on so they're not directly on the rocks? Just curious. Thanks for all your help!!! Oh yeah, I gave you a +5, go check it!

Im hoping the gauge is off since id rather not et a smaller tub. this one was prety expensv and i can lock it!. i appriciae allh info and hlp guys.

Poor Man's P...?
Portable Mushroom Porn?

Thanks in advance!

It's an easy, simple way to get yourself an automated FC. Check it out. I am building one right now. Hope to have it up and running in the next day or so.

I see. Thank you!

While we're at it, how is this better then RR's drill-lots-of-holes-and-add-perlite-TEK? Also, I see a lot of people who seal their chambers totally and vent them like twice a day. What's up with that? Why not just drill some holes in that chamber?

Re: PMP humidity low! [Re: bmy]

I believe RR's was probably for simplistic purposes. Anybody just starting off can drill holes, fill w/ perlte, and fan. Also, it works. some of the more elaborate systems are pretty much automated. Don't have to spray or fan...So, it really depends on how fancy you want to get. Some people hate the shotgun, some love it. 6 in 1, half a dozen in the other. Also, it depends on what you're trying to grow also. Just once in a while, here and there. Really no need for a fancy setup. But, if you're gonna be growing all the time, you might want something a little more elaborate, that can handle more at one time, such as a martha or something....not sure if i answered your question or not?!?! later bro

Sounds like something I might want to do later, if I enjoy the shrooms
I guess the lots-of-holes-and-perlite-tek will be sufficient for 5 pf-cakes which is what I have atm.

Thanks again for the info!

mushrooms abort usually due to unfavorable conditions in their environment, which in your case was probably low humidity. if thats been corrected, i wouldnt worry about future grows.

well i bought a digital temp/humidity gauge from walmart and its a smithfield precise temp kind. i just put it in the box and it says tthe humidity is 85% and temp is 79. i just put the pumps on a timer to go on for 30 min every 3 hours. and light is on 12 on 12 off. you think this will raise the humidity?

also i have those little spike things growin on the base of the mushrooms. i was told that happens when there is too much humidity...

im confused.....this shit is conflicting and i dont know what to do :frown:

well i think i got it right now. the humidity said it was at 65% so i put the pumps on a timer. 30 min every 3 hours. i woke up this morning and saw it was at 99% humidity
