Panaeolus Castaneifolius find Gulfside (Pics)
    #745138 - 07/14/02 11:05 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Experiencing the Gulf breeze and hearing the surf crashing on the shore, while the tide is
coming in, definitely enhances the joy of finding these mushies!

Peace to Everyone,

Peaceful Nomad

Why do you hate him...you live in GA, probably one of the best areas for finding mushies in the south...cubies...weilii...antlantis...and subbs...dude you got it all.

You don't need to live near the beach to find these...I don't. Allthough I dunno if casters grow in GA..but many other species do.

Hello Peaceful Nomad..

Those musht be the pan casters we were looking for yesterday!
-We unfortunately did not locate any on the dolphin island.

I did however find a couple dozen in the grasses along blvd of the arts in sarasota.

These mushrooms grow better on peoples lawns than they do out near the water.

I also located a couple casters the other day near the sarasota bowl.

And the day before that annie and i were at a gymopilus luteofolius patch picking and i found 2 more casters growing in grass.

These are my favorite shrooms and i would so much like to see someone figure upon a way of cultivating these, because the experience is so much better than that of the cow field mushrooms Copelandia cyanescens and Psilocybe Cubensis.

I also have located a palm tree stump of which is producing a type of Gymnopilus that i have yet to land an identity on and my digital camera is out of batteries and the charger is missing.

Again, i would so much like to see this mushroom successfully cultivated.

Keep shroomin,
GGreatOne

Thanks for the replies StInvetroThomas and Moe Howard...
GGreatOne's posts have inspired me to hunt other species of
magic. It is great living in the mushroom capital of the US!

GG ~ I haven't been to Dolphin Island lately. These Casters were
found "on the job". The condo I work for is on the Gulf and these
mushies seem to pop up just about everywhere, from a single
specimen to 4-5 at a time. Of course, I only find them in well
maintained St. Augustine grass with plenty of thatch for a substrate.

I bioassayed 3 (dry) grams last night. Nice "body" experience (no visuals),
but as you have stated, a kind mushroom in comparison to the cubes
and copes. I guess ingesting fresh mushrooms would heighten the
experience considerably.

Thanks for introducing me to these Pan Casters, through your posts. It
is nice to be able to walk down the street, in the park, or just about
anywhere (with the right conditions) here in S. Florida and find these
little beauties. I will also be keeping an eye out for some Gyms. If you
can, will you post some more pics of the gyms for ID purposes?

~ Peace to Everyone

Peaceful Nomad

Hey Nomad,

Sounds good dude.
The first time i found them i was on the job also and i found over 100 of them.

Fresh is the only way to go with these i feel...and they taste very good fresh.

Also be on the look-out for yet another Shroom in the lawns of which is very much similar in appearance called Panaeolus fimicola.

As for the Gym lutes
Only pick the ones that have the blue-blue/green splotches on the caps..
They taste really gross and i would not suggest eating them because most of the places i have found them growing in gardens or flowerbeds watered by spinkler systems running "non-potable" water.
They are very bright Shrooms and are easy to spot.
The patch at the sarasota library seems to be dry lately.

Keep shroomin,
GG

And ill try to find some pics of the gyms for you,
My laptop cord broke down

Keep shroomin,
GG

Hello GG ~

Thanks for the reply. Just got in from work and
due to no rain... no mushies. Next time I get the
chance to sample some pan caster's, it will be fresh.

Peace

Peaceful Nomad
