Food Coloring?
    #683623 - 06/17/02 09:46 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

I do not believe this will work but... Would adding the color the water you use in your substrate change the color of the mushroom flesh at all since they are mostly water? Or would the color be seperated out somewhere and not show up in the fruits?

Would be interesting to see red tinted cubies or somthing. Im sure someone has tried this before???

remember in kindergarden when they cut the base of a celery stick in half and one half went in red food colored water and the other in blue water and the top was reddish bluish purple? it could work. probably wouldnt hurt it. maybe make the cake then birth it and the when you got a few sprouted like 1/2 inch inject it with coloured water. if you mixed jars with colored water then you might not be able to see certain contams. judt dont color you shrooms green!

This just gave me an interesting idea. I was thinking about the problem of not seeing contams so I thought this could be done as part of a dunk. Then I realized this technique could possibly be used to determine how well the cake is absorbing the water. For example, if the water is dark with a red color but the cake only comes out looking pink then perhaps it hasn't aborbed much but if it comes out looking a crimson color then the cake should be heavy with water. Also makes me wonder what would happen if one end of the cake was dipped in red and the other in blue. Or maybe strips of colored paper towel could be wrapped around the cake for a day or so to get a striped effect. Real rainbow colored shrooms would be so cool.

let me guess, you want to grow blue shrooms so you can sell them as "supa potent"?
It's simple enough to just spray food colouring onto them using an airbrush, IME.

what you are talking about in that celery example is the capillary action that plants use to get their nutrients. mushrooms are in a completely different kingdom in the biological world. they are completely different internally than plants are. Of course, I'm no pro mycologist or anything, but it seems to me that the mushrooms would just somehow break the coloring down or wouldnt be able to show coloring to the effect as plants do. Still, I would be very interested if this experiment would work, so post your results so we can end the debate.......

My friend has some cakes colonizing. We will dunk them in bright red water hehehe. See what happens. I will have him try adding red food coloring to the substrate too. (red is the only color i got)

I think shrooms have capiliiaries also, that's what the blue veins are, food coloring sounds like a good idea, it depends if the food coloring gets eaten, or just absorbed, I don't know much about the chemicals in food coloring though.

Yes Moe but this experiment is different from your normal ones in one very large way ... THIS ONE MIGHT NOT BLOW UP! Now I'm not challenging you to blow anything up dude, even tho it's always in tightly controlled labs and whatnot.

I'm curious as hell about this. You know they use dye in human bodies as trace-routes or some shit to see what happens. I might even tell my cousin-in-laws brother about it and see if he wants to give it a shot on some cakes from some guy he knows has growing.

I'm not sure if the color would matter or not ... should either be red, blue or green tho I think since they are the Bosnian flags or something aren't they? And the colors really stand out, not that that matters.

So has anyone tried this? Results?

I think I'll have my friend try it next time I get the chance.

I can remember doing it at school with red dye once, when we were looking at xylem cells. It wasn't the kind of dye you'd want to consume though.

i was in the store the other day. And seen many flavored waters. My question is if the only water you use throughout your process will it effect the way the end result would taste?

When growing Marijuana there is a tecnique of watering with flavoured water a few hours before harvest to enhance the flavour and it really does work. One of the best things is Coca Cola and although it doesn't taste like Coke, it does have a very nice fruity flavour. Simply dunk your cake in flat 7-Up (no caffein) and a bit of food colouring. The sugar will energize your cakes and the I do not see why the flavour should not be absorbed and passed on to the mushrooms. Perhaps by continuously dunking in pop you might keep your cakes going for a long time. I don't know if the sugars they use are the right kind, but it's worth a try for anyone into experimenting. I can't do it right now as I don't have any jars to spare although the more I think about it--- I will try it in the future. Maybe Redpop will kill two birds, giving nice sweet juicy pink mushrooms. Mr Goudas Cherry Syrup would be worth a try and it's already red and thick with sugar.

Gee this Blueberry X Hawaiian Sativa is inspirational. I think I'll spark up the roach. Ahhhhh.......!
