Comcast is Crazy

I've never heard of anything like this, but apparently Comcast has reported my friend for illegal downloading... and they are freaking out right now. I have no idea what to do. Has anyone heard of this? I'm really worried!

It happens all the time in completely random incidents. It happened to me once with Time Warner but they just sent an e-mail telling me to get rid of the files (only a few were considered important to them, from a specific film studio). If they decide to press charges there's not a lot one can do.

One option is to erase the data (with special scrubbing software) and thoroughly destroy the drive physically.

I got a warning from my internet company. Whoever owns Children of Men torrented a copy as bait and reported the downloaders/uploaders to their ISPs. Are you sure your friend didn't just receive a warning?

They said they're looking into taking legal action, and their account is being investigated.

If he had an open wireless access point installed at the time, it could have been any of his neighbors.


It might also be a good idea to format the drive, wipe the sectors, and reinstall everything without the p2p stuff, though they don't really come over and check your computer...

That's sounds pretty fucked up I'd definitely drop com cast with a quickness that's laced with some serious bullshit.

I got the email from Comcast when I downloaded the last episode of Lucky Louie. It didn't say they were going to take action.

Does it say the specific file they are pursuing him over?

Yeah, they already put holds and slows on any BT downloads. They are getting really serious about this, I guess.

Not likely, he panics very easily about things. He's freaking out right now.

EDIT: You guys called it, kinda. lol His dad called comcast back, they said it was just a warning now. So, he's calming down. It looks like everything will be all right. Thanks for the help, though. :laugh:

well he's inocient until proven guilty.

just tell him to say he didn't download anything and he doesn't know who did.

how can they prove he was the one who did it! he has alot of friends right? maybe he through a party!

unsecured wifi network is key to claiming innocence. even if u didnt have it unsecured when u got busted, just claim that u did.

Not with torrents. You can see the IP and provider for all seeders/leechers on any file you are connected to. The company takes that list, sends notices to the providers and then what happens next is up to the company. I imagine in five years this form of action will either be unnecessary or involve some kind of harsh penalty. Possibly death.
