Well, this question is a "loop-hole" of sorts in the rules, though, is encompassed within rule #7:
Quote:
I. Mushroom Hunting Forum rules
3. Do not make threads for the discussion of weather, conditions, or rain alone. includes complaining about the weather or asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms". As a general rule of thumb, if it has rained within the last 2-3 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, then *yes* it is possible that the mushroom you are looking for is growing. Threads that are made for the discussion of weather alone will be locked or deleted.
7. Do NOT ask about current finds in your area. These posts have been flooding the forum at the start of seasons. If you're curious about if mushrooms are growing in your area, get out there and look! Mushrooms don't read the books. Sometimes they fruit outside of season. There is no set date for any season, only vast generalizations. Your best bet is that if it's close to the season for the mushroom you are looking for, you just might find some.
That said, I will try to answer your question. Each mushroom species has a different rate of growth- some mushrooms, like Ganoderma species, take quite a while to mature, compared to mushrooms like Conocybe, which take only one night to show up, and mature, and are all shriveled by the end of the next day. Conversely, Ganoderma persist for months, only disappearing when the bark beetle infestation has done enough damage, that the fruiting body falls to the ground, and slowly gets eaten away, andany remainder, crumbles into the top soil. Gymnopilus tend to be on the slow side, especially for pinning after rain fall, since a log or branch is more difficult to saturate, then say, the ground. If it is a patch on woodchips, pinning should be sooner (temperatures are allowing), since the chips absorb water quickly. I personally would start hunting three days after rain, but if i only wanted to find Gyms, I would go looking a week after the first rain, then, if the rain continues, go hunting again 3-7 days after that, going 1-2 times per week. Or, if you want to search harder and longer for the fun of it, continue to hunt as much as you want after the first week, but expand your areas to search.
Anyway,I hope that helps.
I am going to update the rules... fix that loop-hole. This has been bothering me for a while.

yeah the field guide,psss....
in the northeast big gyms start in June til the snow flies.it dont matter when you look for them as far as rain goes.drier areas of course will need more moisture to fruit but along forested rivers and the hollows along the tributary streams the moisture is created by the fog at night.these areas mentioned hold moisture well even when there is alot of heat and little rain (fog and a good thick canopy close to water).

You know, it's humorous really, but I grew up in N.E. and didn't even know we had native shrooms, but then again the potencey in gyms is probably very low correct?

I. Mushroom Hunting Forum rules
6. No asking WHEN or WHERE mushrooms, or a specific mushroom species will grow. This includes, asking what habitat a mushroom[s] can be found- or their preferred fruiting conditions. This can be very simply answered by using the "search posts" feature: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php Asking if "now is a good time to look for mushrooms". Or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. Each mushroom species has a different rate of growth- some mushrooms, like Ganoderma species, take quite a while to mature, compared to mushrooms like Conocybe, which take only one night to show up, and mature, and are all shriveled by the end of the next day. Conversely, Ganoderma persist for months, only disappearing when the bark beetle infestation has done enough damage, that the fruiting body falls to the ground, and slowly gets eaten away, and any remainder, crumbles into the top soil. These issues are sort of redundant, as addressed in rules #4 and #5, yet needed to be explained more concisely, due to many people seeing these questions as loop-holes since they were not directly described.
