Big Laughing Gyms w/pics confirmation needed

Here?s some pictures of some mushrooms that I believe to be Gymnopilus spectabilis. Click the thumbnails to get an enlarged Image. Gym Pictures They fit the discretion of G. spec in my ID books down to the letter. They even have the bitter smell and taste to them (I haven?t tasted enough to see if there active or not) We found them growing out of what seemed to be an old dead Douglas Fir.
Anyways, this is my first encounter with this mushroom, and since I know there?s a few of you around with experience in this Genera, I was wondering what your guys thoughts on these mushrooms pictures are..

According to Alexander Smith, Gymnopilus spectabilis grows only on hardwoods. According to his key, the fact that they are growing on Douglas Fir would indicate that they are Gymnopilus ventricosus, which he says contains no psilocybin.
Nice find and photos.

Couldn't we also place Gymnopilus sapineus as a possible specie ?

Given that the veils are not consistently persistent, it might be a possibility. Examination of the spores would give it away immediately. The spores of G. ventricosus are 4-5.5 microns and of G. sapineus are 7-10 microns long.
Psychonaut, if you can check the spores under a microscope and get a rough size for the length, the ID should be obvious.

Hey guys thanks for the replys.... So to answer your questions...No they don't stain blue
All my books the me that they preferhardwoods in eastern North America and conifier in the west. I'm in western canada..so Douglas Firs would be a habitat.
And, a microscope wouls be nice, but I don't have one to use

That?s for the info. Mr.mush, the books I?m using are Stamets ?Psilocybin mushrooms of the world? and the ? National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms?.
You might be right about these being ventricosus instead of spectabilis. After you mention it, I did some looking around and found some info on G.ven. It looks like theses mushrooms I found could be either type. I guess the only way to know for sure is to either send you the spores or find a crazy friend that?s willing to test to see if these mushrooms are active.

Mr. Mushrooms, thanks for the ID. I?m not too disappointed , as I?ve found many other mushrooms this season. In any case these mushrooms where interesting and photographed good.
Again, thanks for taking time to view the spores.
