Using Perlite UNDER a casing
    #738074 - 07/11/02 01:18 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Recently, I have been using a layer of perlite (instead of vermiculite) as a bottom layer for my casings. I usually put about an inch of Perlite, and 1/2 inch of straight up peroxide on that. Lately, I have been getting a lot of infection that starts inside the cake and is not visible from the top, but the casings stall out (in this case, before pinning =( I case with sterilized 50/50 PLUS)

So my question is, should I be using vermiculite on the bottom instead? I have had good success with smaller casings (1/2 pint PF jars in round pie tins) but in this large pan (aluminum 9x6x3.5) infection spread very rapidly, and I didn't see it until I picked up the substrate. What do you guys think?

I would never use perlite as a base for my casings. Use vermiculite. Vermiculite holds more water and is safe to eat, perlite is nasty dangerous glass.

I tried this a few times as well and I found that the perlite gets contamed much easier...is messier (I hate getting perlite EVERYWHERE)...and smells funny after being under a casing for awhile.

I've been having luck w'no casing on the bottom lately:)

Just use verm on the bottom. Its cheap, easy, and provides another area for moisture retention.
