the great chain of being

I am not very educated on this topic, I was hoping someone could tell me about their drug-induced or academically provoked realizations/revelations about the great chain of being, which is a medieval conceptualization of the universe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Chain_of_Being

Although this idea seems outdated to me when compared to the holistic string theory or the one infinitely repeating pattern, this way of seeing the universe must be relevant to at least a few of you - personally, I have seen visions of a pyramid great chain of being on acid a few times and it made a lot of sense to me.

As I saw it, the chain of being is not a chronological thing but exists in the eternal now, but it is through chronological time that the chain of being manifests itself. I had the idea that time is the journey from the lowest thing on the chain to the highest and that the highest part of the chain was getting better and better all the time and was bringing all the lowly parts up to it. I think this is partly what Kabbalah is about if I am not mistaken.

I saw how all the lowly parts of existence were still maintained in the great chain of being but they would be less and less emphasized on the way to the top. The lowest part of this chain would probably be like a hellish eternity on Salvia where you are completely trapped and confused and the highest part would be like the best possible thing ever unimaginable. And it seemed to me that Earth was like a middleground in every possible sense between the two extremes and that "we" really are on a spiritual journey to the best thing ever.

Those sites affirmed a lot of what I was shown or realized, thanks for sharing these links Markos. I read a book recently which used the concept of "holons," I wasn't aware that this was part of the great chain of being philosophy but I always thought the concept was brilliant.

I thoroughly believe in and am realizing more and more that the spiritual part is highly important.

totally agree with this:

Man is a special instance in this conception. He is both mortal flesh, as those below him, and also spirit. In this dichotomy, the struggle between flesh and spirit becomes a moral one. The way of the spirit is higher, more noble; it brings one closer to God. The desires of the flesh drag one down.
