tips on making rubbermaid containers air tight?

My humidity is a bit low. I'm using perlite in a big rubbermaid container. The problem is, it is definitely not air tight. The lid just kind of sits on top of the container. I think this is the problem. I put very heavy things on top of it in order to seal it but it's not good enough. Has anyone any tips for making it air-tight?

I had a lot of trouble finding something to put them in, this town has no styrfoam containers.

one thought may be use duct tape or some not-super-thin tape to run around the edge, making it thicker and padded, or goto menards or someplace and get some foam sheets and tape those all the way down so its tape over foam, padded tape thing, aroudn the bottom part...


then maybe it will fit snugly and shit

just wrap the top with seran wrap, and tape the edges if you think thas not enough.

this works well too. Most of those tubs are tapered so cut one off level with your perilite, place on a garbage bag, get another tub, remove lid , and place over the cut off one. If you mist the inside of the tub and the garbage bag with h202 it will create a seal and keep the humidity through the roof if you mist too often.

Line the rubbermaid edge with weatherstripping for your car. It should seal the lid down.

Well is it an incubator or a fruiting chamber? I mean, a fruiting chamber doesn't have to be COMPLETELY air tight, because the cakes are already colonized and the casings protected with a casing layer.
I mean think, you're worried about every bit of the container being air tight, yet you'll have to open it twice a day to fan it out if you don't use a humidifier.

I made a line of silicone sealent around the top edge, let it dry for a few minutes and snapped the lid on, it makes a gasket (kind of) just don't put the lid on too soon or you'll glue it all together.

I have to agree if any thing i ahve had to leave it open a crack at times to get my RH down since i used silicone.

Same here thats why i am looking in to somethign better than perlite. May not even have to do any thign other than mist and run the cool mst in the closet for a few mins. the closet is natruly humid and warm so i run it for 10 mins and all you can see is a fog that lasts for hours in there. Might just turn the while thing in to a big terrerium SP?

Office Depot sells 2 ft wide -- 1000 ft long rolls of industrial cling plastic wrap that is clear as clean glass, sticks to itself like white on rice for about $18. This stuff is tough, 10 times better than Saran wrap & works great to seal a tub. SixTango

The silicone thing sounds like it would work really good, but I dont have any. What I did, was get bubblewrap and double layer it with the smooth side out and taped it to the rim. Then, I put tape along the inside, to seal the wrap to the container. It is MUCH MUCH better than before.

What I recomend is to ditch the regular lid that came with the rubbermaid container since they are usually all funky shaped and not flat. Then put thick weatherstripping all the way around the top of the container. Then take a sheet of plexiglass that is the appropriate size and put on top. To make it fully airtight, just put a small weight on top of it.

I tried silicone caulking, but it would never stick to the rubber very well. Once it got humid it just came off too easy.
