Gonzales Resigns
    #7339034 -

Embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned. President Bush is expected to make a statement about Gonzales at 11:30 a.m. from his ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he has been vacationing.

About time. I had a bit of inside information that this was coming. I can't go into specifics, but there is a massive investigation focused on Gonzales that touched me clear down here in the Caribbean. Based upon what I know about the size of the investigation, he may still go down pretty hard. Bush better keep his pardon book open, 'cause his friend is most likely going to need it soon.

It seems to me that we are seeing people bailing out before some sort of shit hits the fan. There's less than two years left and he's had to restaff fairly heavily.

The Bush zoo crew continues to go out with a whimper.

Yeah the rats really are abandoning ship! I don't think it will save poor Gonzo though. You see, he lacks a very valuable skill in politics-he is a poor liar. A particularly valuable skill in this failed administration.

I just wish the core of the rot could have been cleaned out before the damage was done to our country. Cheney will probably drop dead of his final heart attack the day before he is indicted.

Thank god! I was thrilled when I heard this. Although he does deserve to be in jail rather then just resigning, but one less moronic criminal in charge

Perjury, although I don't know if that's punishable by incarceration

It is, if you can prove it. Do you have specific examples, or are you going on hearsay and assumption?

Have you ever seen Gonzales testify? But in all seriousness, it would be very hard to prove. I didn't really watch too many of Gonzales's testimonies and until I saw his testimony about trying to get Ashcroft to sign the illegal wiretapping bill while he was under sedation I was going purely on heresay. However upon viewing that testimony it is clear that he is delibrately hindering the investigations of Congress. Let me watch the whole thing and I'll get back to you with some specific examples.

Yes, and he goes to great length to ensure that his answers are not capable of being proven as perjury. Not that he answers the questions that he has been given, but I don't believe he tells any lies that can be proven. (You can't prove, yet, that a person can or can't recall something...)

I have no love for the man, but accusing somebody in his position of perjury is serious, at least to me. Not liking his answers, or feeling that he is not being as forthcoming as congress would like are not illegal. You can't force him to incriminate himself.

Hmm... now that I read the precise definition of perjury I don't know if I can personally prove his guilt, which is fine by me, because it is very apparent that Gonzales dodges questions and deliberatelyy is hindering senate judiciary committee investigations. If only "I don't recall" was possible to prove untrue. If you want a good example of Gonzales being untruthful you should watch the July 24th hearing.

But in response to your original question, no, I cannot prove that he is lying

You make a good point. Let me instead change my charge to say that he is dishonest, and unprovably criminal. He is very careful to avoid perjury. But the testifying question was a joke, I didn't doubt that you were educated in the matter, probably moreso then me. I still believe that he has committed the crime, but it is, for now, unprovable.

Haha thank you. Well, he's gone anyway and we don't have to try to prove perjury and indict him. Here's to Gonzales resigning

Early reports suggest Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff ( He of Katrina fame ) may replace him.

Replacing one incompetant with another incompetant is Bush's time-tested method of governance after all. Maybe they could dig up FEMA chief "Brownie" for another run? The entire Bush administration has been a disaster so they could use someone with experience in this area.

Anyway, it is early yet so I would heavily discount any such reports at this point.
