Justice Dept. Probing Whether Gonzales Lied

By Dan Eggen Paul Kane

The Justice Department's inspector general indicated yesterday that he is investigating whether departing Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales gave false or misleading testimony to Congress, including whether he lied under oath about warrantless surveillance and the firings of nine U.S. attorneys.

Should be interesting. For anyone who watched the testimony of gonzales and then saw the testimony of the acting attorney general Comey- it was pretty clear Gonzales lied.

For those interested, the Comey testimony below:

Shumer grills gonzales about his testimony (previous to the taping) that conflicted with the Comey testimony. This is short, and very interesting to me. Gonzales gets chewed out, its hilarious.

For anyone interested, go on google video and see the long ass videos of gonzales testifying about the hospital incident. Comey painted a very different picture.

I hope they grill this motherfucker until he cracks and gives up the whole administration like Watergate, but they're probably reach a deal and everything will continue on as normal.

I'm curious as to what could come out of this. Since Gonzales has less than a month to go, does the inspector general generally investigate people while they're not working for the dept? Does the IG have the authority to do so once gonzales leaves, and if so- what can he do? Though I think the office just issues reports and recomendations anyways, but not sure.

I don't know who is doing the investigation, but I do know that it started (at least) two weeks before Gonzales resigned. I also know the investigation is massive, as it touched me clear down here in the Caribbean. Finally, it sounds as if they are using the same techniques that went into the Microsoft antitrust investigation to nail Gonzales.

Yeah, its pretty clear he lied. Also, the major ethical questions, irregardless of the perjury, is the fact he tried to pressure ashcroft into reauthorizing the nsa program, while the man was incapacitated and had no authority to do so (comey was atty general and he refused).

Also, the dir. of the fbi raced to the hospital, and had agents stationed in the room to prevent comey from being removed by gonzales. Gonzales clearly lied about the scope and particulars of pretty much everything at this meeting (or Comey did, which I can't accept for a variety of reasons).

Seuss, Gonzales is still atty general till sometime in september. He announced his resignation effective on that date.

Trying to allow for time to cover his tracks? I highly doubt anything will come from all of this, I mean anything they manage to dig up on this criminal cocksucker is just going to lead to so many other places that this could virtually destroy this administration if anyone follows up on it. Also this is getting virtually no press in the United States which leads me to believe that something is going on behind the scenes to bury and ignore whatever this investigation is turning up. Just my opinion though... I tend to me a hardcore pessimist when it comes to politics.

Frankly I think its a great tribute to this country that the department of justice is investigating the attorney general. Say what you will, but that wouldn't happen in china.

Maybe if the dems hadn't been able to get control of the committees this whole thing never would have been able to be exposed, but I think its nonetheless somewhat of a gold star for america that anything at all is happening.

Oh absolutely, don't get me wrong... I'm pleased as punch that finally there's some investigation into the criminal and unconstitutional acts of someone of this administration but until there's convictions or clear proof of innocence, I am really skeptical. However, you are quite correct and this is a sign of the decency of our system.

True. In my mind, he resigned the day he submitted his letter, regardless of the date he actually leaves office. However, you are correct, and technically he doesn't resign until the day he actually leaves office.

> Trying to allow for time to cover his tracks?

Nope, the tracks, so to speak, have been cast in plaster and preserved. (Loosely, I was involved with making the casts from this part of the world. I just wish I knew where they got sent.)

I don't mean this to be sarcastic or in any way malicious towards you but the world you inhibit and call you own is really starting to make me wonder. I was kind of fucking with you in the other thread but now I'm interested. Could you elaborate on that at all?

Let me get this straight. The Justice Department is investigating the Attorney General- the head of its own Justice Department?

You find it comforting that the fox is guarding the hen house?

Yeah I think that it is somewhat of a vindication. The justice department is investigating its own chief.

This is not the ideal situation. The ideal situation is that an independant body, which the inspector general may or may not be, with the authority to do something will investigate. This is allready happening with the committees.

While Gonzales may or may not belong in jail, his resignation was surely a result of the indepentant committees' actions.

For someone in the justice dept, its hard to imagine them prosecuting him, so the congress is sort of the last bastion of hope.

All in all, I'm pleased with how these situations have developed.
