Camera Recommendations ...?

ok so what cameras are you people using for your ethno photography?

im looking at a Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 with an 18-70mm F3.5-5.6 (D) lens to start.

my camera was stolen so its time to invest in a decent digital SLR...

any recommendations?

I use a Cannon A640 and I love it. Examples here and here.

You are probably looking for something a lot more fancy. I was at a MAPS party where someone had a 60 megapixel camera.

I use Canon IXUS 500 , but also planning to upgrade to digital SLR. EOS 40D if I can save enough! if not EOS 350D or 400D. Other than Canon I would consider Nikon D40X.

Heya!

For extensive reviews of digital cameras and sample images (more like) taken with reviewed cameras you should check out http://www.steves-digicams.com/. There is good forum also. I used the page to choose my digi camera some years back, which is Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom with 10x optical zoom :smile: I won't recommend it as it is not SLR tho :smile:

i use the canon 400d SLR (XTi in america), and it is a great camera, but as a botanist, i need a separate lens for good macro shots...i was also looking at some of the nikon SLR cameras, a little higher priced, but they are supposedly really nice.

Ive read a couple of bad reviews about the noise levels on the higher ISO speeds on the sony you mentioned. Personally i dont like sony products in general anyways, so i am a little biased towards only seeing the bad reviews.

I definately recommend the Canon 400D as a great entry level SLR, and canon does make some of the best lenses...

I use one of the original Nikon coolpix cameras, the coolpix 990. Even though it's only 3.34 megapixels it's an excellent camera. I've found the most important features are good optics (with optical zoom) and good macro capability. I can take a clear picture of a small coin and have it fill the frame. Nice for those close-ups of small flowers and such.

Fugifilm has good cams and macro shots. They arent too expensive either.

fugifilm uses a different type of sensor, which some people say is not as good. which i too have leaned towards. octagon pentagon something gon...im bad with math crap. anyway its a different shape and coolects differently.

i was happy with the camera i had...
it was good enough for a compact digital i guess, but lacked definition... Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX8



im still considering my options anyway, hmmm... :crazy2:

my first camera was a $30 fugifilm from walmart.  that thing went swimming hit rocks when falling during a hike...go knows how much abuse.  i loved that camera.

but the digitals i do not like :smirk:  they are ok, but not as good as others...if your that picky.

I'm very pleased with my Fuji Finepix S9600/S9100. It's not a true digital SLR but its close enough and a hell of a lot cheaper!
