Recommended plants for HPS lighting & garden plan
    #4600055 - 08/30/05 07:34 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, I'm wanting to build a small closet garden, 100% legal (in the USA). I've already got a fairly beat up etoliated Pedro (bad lighting and bad cutting), and I would just like everyone's recommendations for what plants would work well under HPS lighting, as I realize it may be too much for some plants.

The area is fairly small: approx 3 1/2ft length x 1 1/2ft wide x 3 1/2ft height and I was planning on ordering a 250watt HPS from inside sun (yeah I know they have their problems, but I simply can't afford a higher priced system - anyone with recent experience?)

I would like to get a few cacti.. maybe one more pedro and several torches. Does anyone have a pereskiopsis they'd be willing to trade to me? What are some other legal plants that would do well in this set up?

My window situation is fairly poor, I have North and West facing windows with minimal light, though I suppose they would work for starting seedlings? (maybe with a fluoro booster)

Also: what is the safest way to plug in a HID system. Cord directly into the wall/timer? or use a surge protector? would anyone recommend that i set the ballast on some bricks to help isolate its heat?

Thanks for your help guys.

why get a HPS? HPS are for flowering marijuana or do they actually use them for anything else? Almost all other plants such as cactus all you want would be MH. Cactus grow with 16 hours of light better then 12 hours of light. So you could grow vegatables and other stuff that likes 16 hours of light.

Metal Halides have been made obsolete by the newer spectrum ajusted HPS lamps such as the Phillips Son T range.

MH lamps also male heaps more heat.

They are ok for flood lights and that's it.

I run a 400MH in a 4'x4'x5foot high space. I have several different types of cacti and succulents under here. I also have Hemia s, kanna, salvia, japanese rush, altropa belladona, and loads of different tropical house plants.
A couple things I found, cacti seedlings should be shaded for the first year, this amount of light tends to turn them pink because of sunburn. The salvia and some of the tropicals need a higher humidity than the cacti, so I use a small martha type set-up for them.
You can grow most any plants under these lights if you consider all their individual needs. Think about MJ set-ups with the air circulation for co2 intake, amount of light for the space, grow height vs age of plants, ect.. It sounds like you will have enough light for the space, you just need to consider how to shade/seperate areas.

I actually got some cacti to flower indoors with a 1000W MH. It was pretty cool. 400W MH is great for lots of plants.
