Can i use silica packets that come in like clothes?

I have a friend who works at a shoe store and they were wondering if it would be ok to use the silica/desiccant packets that come in the shoes?


edit: i meant for drying and storage of mushrooms
i knew it looked to short when i typed it

shure he can do what ever he wants with them. he can even eat them if he "wants" to. his choice :smile:

they work great for storage - keeping dried shrooms crisp.

you probably wouldnt want to dry wet shrooms with it but you could
"crisp up" fan dried mushrooms.

wow... im not useing a fan to dry, just letting them sit there on a rack

haha... always fan first, desiccant 2nd.

silica will work, but I would prolly pour it all into the bottom of a desiccant chamber.

When in a hurry, I've used a cracked oven on the lowest setting, after fanning for a day. Worked fine. You gotta use a thermometer tho... I think ~155F is the hottest you wanna go, or they might lose some magic. Some ovens are hotter than others and the heat will fluctuate with the oven cracked. The element will keep turning on, so you gotta watch it. My oven seems to get a bit too hot with the door closed.(185F)


Dehydrators are the way to go, tho.

but starting two hours ago, they are on a fan :thumbup:

That's the thing about this site Wutang, everyday you can come on here and learn something new and improved. Pretty cool ain't it.

I keep those packets in the baggie as well. But I try to use the ones in the vitamin bottles since those were made to touch things that are consumed.

if you get enough of the packets it will work fine. desiccant is desiccant. no? i wouldnt let the mushrooms touch them though. and id look into what kind of desiccant they contain. im sure its no big deal.

silica kitty litter works too! makes it easier than breaking open an uncountable number of individual packets

well my friend has a big packet from their lcd tv that they are going to use in conjunction with the little packets. Do they really need to be ripped open? i mean the package its in now allows airflow doesnt it?
