rye + microwave = goood
    #7297299 -

hi

all over this website i found that you need a pressure cooker ... i live in england and i dont really see to many pressure cookers? i may just be wierd ? who know .. but any way i decided to experiment i read a few teks on rye and had a go my self...

MICROWAVE (Y)

it worked really well, give it a go  i blasted it in a sealed tupperware container you know the ones... with water upto the level of the tub which was half full of rye for 3 minutes, then drained off the  water , as seen if you leave them to soak for a day ... i repeated this procedure 4 times then once for 8 minutes ( no idea why ) then once again for 3 for good measure for 3 minutes .

they hadsoaked up lots of water and i had drained loads of dirty out of them and now where 50% bigger a few had burst open.

i drained of most of the water keeping a tiny drizzle inside
quickly squirted 2.5 into the tub and closed the lid...

3 days after being kept nice and warm there is widespread mycelium growth.. yay

you should all give it a go

I hate to burst your bubble, but you are by no means out of the woods  Once they are fully colonized, then you can breathe easy....

yea, im not sure how effectively that would have killed all the spores and bacteria and other microscopic critters, which is the point of pressure cooking. it seems like you managed to absorb a bunch of water, which is good and which the mycelium needs, but if there are still spores and bacteria which havent been killed, itl be a great breeding ground for them too, watch out for those contams!

Your microwave tek, will eventually fail you if you try it over and over again. If you have no pressure cooker and want to do grains then read this.

if you're doing quart jars (which if you're working with grains id highly suggest) you're going to need at least a 20 qt or bigger pot. The small PC's wont fit the quart jars in them.

Microwave teks for grains suck, highly unreliable and the amount of effort it takes is just too much. Much easier to save up the 50-100 dollars and buy yourself a PC.

I got a 6 litre one and it fits 4 standard mayonaise jars (500ml) in there nicely.

For under 19 quid this looks a starter...
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8611178.htm

All the American ones seem to be absolute giants compared to what we get over here. Which means no quart jars for us. Like I said mayo jars fit good in mine or cooking sauce jars, home pride etc...

You can also get a spawn bag in there 1 maybe 2 at a time if you go that route.

Good luck

A microwave doesn't get your grains any hotter than boiling them on the stove.

I am not explaining it again. I am going to send you all back to high school physics, instead!

i bought this book the other day,(Principles and Methods of Sterilization in Health Sciences) and i goes in to great detail why this will never work, its great have a pionering spirt and try new stuff ,, but alas this is not new stuff and doctors and sientis have tryed every witch way when it comes to Sterilization and what does and does not work and thay had it down pat 80 years ago with an autoclave (presser cooker)

Are you replying to me about microwaves???
If so I suggest you read the thread again, this time carefully as I will be asking questions after you have finished.

I'm suggesting a small pressure cooker, and have found one within Meatheads budget, in his country and am suggesting cheap jars that are available locally, will also provide him with food first and will fit into said pressure cooker! All for under £20 (that's about $40). I will have to send you back to high school to redo some comprehension tests!

Rye is a very hard thing to keep contam free,

I feel sorry this guy wasted his money on spores, just to have his inevitable outcome for not sterilizing.

i went 2 years without a pressure cooker after i lost part of it while moving.
usually 1 or 2 out of 5 jars of wbs would contam. although that
is a pretty lame success rate, i'd have a couple of jars that did not contam.
that's plenty of spawn if you just want to grow a z or 2.
