Careers in Wildlife
    #7222888 -

We all only get one life (that im aware of)
and Id like to spend in somewhere else in the world
Besides America. I was wondering if anyone in the Shroomery
has or knows someone in a career in wildlife conversation
Actual on site research of animals, where I
can help this world before I leave it
I figure we have messed it up enough.
Id just like to get an idea of what
it entails and maybe some help finding a good school
my current university doesn't have a great foundation
for environmental studies.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks

Come to Tasmania, we have a great wildlife conversation program going on down here, plus it's such an obscure part of the world (and we speak english)

if you like nature, rainforests, crisp foggy mornings, wildlife and the smel of fresh air then you will love Tasmania. It's pretty much all it has going for it

i'm a zoology major at uf and am trying to go in the same direction.... hehe wildlife conservation instead of conversation.

but umm, I have a lot of interest in this route but eh idk..

I was thinking about doing a summer or a semester with the Student Conservation Alliance.... pretty much they pay your room and board and you can work in any state in the US with jobs from educating highschoolers/elementry kids, trail maintenance, controled burnings.... and so on

Wildlife conversation? Is that like a bartender?

I would mention something about the conversation with wildlife, but Ive had that happen before, and as we all know, sometimes, when we ingest some of the little capped ones, we can converse with any part of life's web.

Ok so about the conservation. There are plenty of ways to do this. Start with the degree. There are quite a few good schools in the U.S. which offer stuff, I went to the University of Vermont's Rubenstein School of Natural Resources. There are good schools also in Florida, I think the Gainesville campus is the best there. Also UC Davis has a good wildlife / marine biologist degree.

Ok there are a few schools elsewhere that will do it as well and provide a large range of diverse topics while you study the subject.

Apart from this, I would suggest you try and get an internship or volunteer position actually doing hands-on work at a captive wildlife facility or an in-situ conservation field experience thingy. I know Round River Conservation Studies has some good things going on. This hands on experience will be able to help you figure out what you are good at and what your interest areas truly are, before or while you are at school. If you dont get hands on experience, it will be tough at school and you may find yourself switching majors 20 times.

I had the experience beforehand, working with crocodilians and large venomous and non-venomous snakes, as well as work at a wildcat conservation facility (www.cathouse-fcc.org), but I saw many of my peers lose a lot of time and energy once at school coz they didnt know what they wanted till they were in their 2-3rd year.

If you need more specific suggestions, feel free to let me know where you live, and what you already know or can do + age, and I could suggest more area-specific options or ideas, as well as ideas on where to start.

Good luck!

G.

Oooh Oooohm, Can I come?

I really would love to come visit!! I dont have the money or time to come now but I really really want to. Tasmania's rainforests apparently are the best thing if you want to know what Gondwanaland's flora looked like!!! Well sort of anyway.

tasmania has some amazing rain forests and scenery, contrast to what most otd fags will say (who are just pisy because theyre fagot hippies)

and there are plenty of career options in wildlife conservation, research, care, wildlife parks and P&W (Parks & Wildlife, diff organisation)

dunno, look into it
