I have a few cows! What next?
    #728624 - 07/07/02 07:46 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Well, we have two cows. They are about 4 month old male jerseys. I have spent the last few hours checking out information online and I couldnt find anything about hunters who have their own hunting ground so to speak. Do we have any cow farmers out there? Do the cows need someting to produce mushrooms? I have heard rumors about oak leaves? A mineral block?

I just moved to Florida from up North last year and although I have enjoyed mushrooms in the past it has been years and the were given to me by a friend. I have never had cows so I really dont know what I am doing.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I await someone's reply with baited breath.

Hello,Ilive in florida also,as far as the cows go If you have some land with grass
you could let them graze as well as feeding them grain,If you dont have grass
I'm sure grain would be fine.As far as getting the shrooms' to grow I would let them shit and after rains check for shrooms,If none pop up I would start buying spore prints and scraping them off in their feed, hope this helps a little
later

Thank's for the input! The cows have about 3 acres of grass and we are giving them sweet feed we got from the dairy farmer. I have had a few people tell me some of the salt blocks are used to stop the production of mushrooms. I guess to keep people from hunting? Does anyone know anything about this, I dont want to buy the wrong thing and I dont feel comfortable asking these types of questions at the feed store.

I'd get some prints and feed them to the animals. Well, i would try to hunt for some pan cyans or cubensis in you area, believe me Florida has many shrooms, then you could colect every spore print and start feeding the animals. Other options is asking or buying some cubensis prints online.
About buying the right food for your animals, try to give them hay or straw, if you have the chance to let the animals loose then let them just eat plants and herbs of the field wich is the best, if not ask for organic only food at the stores, try searching the bags and see if they refer something about fungicides, you don't want that.

Peace,
MAIA

No, salt blocks and mineral blocks don't stop shrooms from growing, thats just asinine.

So if I was to fill some apples with all kinds of strains, all those strains would just pop up when the conditions are right? That would kick ass. Walking through a field picking all kinds of strains. hmmmmm......this one looks like a eq, look there's a gt lol

I have read that mushrooms do not grow where the cows are fed salt. Salt is a fungicide. Don't be so lazy and expect the cows to do all the work. You work too. Collect your cowpies now and make a pile in a shady place. You could put a layer of hay down first. Find some mushroom spores of the type you like. www.bluefairysupply.com has some wonderful Florida mushrooms. Go through the process of the jars and then innoculate the pile. Keep on throwing the cow pies into the pile. You never have to search for mushrooms, just pies. Or you could find mushrooms in an existing field and throw their inoculated cow pie into the pile. The spores may find their way naturally into the remaining field, but then, you have the type of mushroom that you want. You can even water the pile when you want mushrooms. The mushrooms in my garden grow when I water (chlorinated) even without rain.

once you get some nice poo. you could try innoculating it. But i think making a few jars then spawning it.

I have also heard that spores will live thru the cows digestion. I would try all 3 .
