Dark Star Question

Hey deadheads. Help me out will ya? I've never been a big fan of what might be the quintessential dead tune: DARK STAR.

Until I heard Bobby Weir and Ratdog's rendition. The first section of the verse is in A major mostly. But the second and third go into an E minor chord with a little walk up to an A major. It is so bad ass.

The verse doesn't start till about 3 minutes in. But my question is, has this always been how dark star was arranged? I don't remember any minor chords in Dark Stars by the Dead that I've heard. Is this new?

Sorry dude, but that is not in A major....I tried playing in A, and it sound out of key no matter what part I played during. Dark Star has traditionally been played in D major and parts in A minor or C major. The tune was very modern compared to the old original Dead version but I heard very few notes that were different.

The verse, I heard as any other. I was playing along, like any other....key of D. The first chords, I believe is an A, but doesn't mean it's the key of A.

How I typically play the main theme or verse, different than bobby, but the melody is the same.

The tab isn't slightly messed up due to the font, but here is the traditional intro, with some theme licks. The key isn't different here, than they version you linked.

Here is the main theme, or verse of the song. The only different I noticed is someplaces they played a D where they might have played a G in the past. Either way, I here very similar structures and arrangements.

But hell, this is just my quick stab at it. There were some off notes through the tracks, which could have lead you to believe it was in A, but I believe it's no different from the originals, as far a key goes.

Jdarks interpretation tabs of dark star

There...that'll give you more than you need to get the playing done.  There's lots of usage of minors in there...mm..leading tones and atonal weirdness...

Which era darkstars have you been listening to that it took ratdog to get you into the tune? (not that there's a thing wrong with RD :gd_icon:)

Sorry man, the first 2 and a half minutes of the dark star I linked to are in G. It shifts up into A just before the verse.

My theory is pretty rusty. I was referring to the opening chord as A, I didn't mean that the song was in A major.

Anyway I wasnt asking how to play the song. I can figure that out myself. I was asking if it always sounded the way it is in this acoustic version of a verse I attached.

i play it mostly in a mixo (d maj). but i get lost after a couple of key changes, that's something only the boys can perfect imo :gd_icon:
