The Stars
    #1846538 - 08/24/03 10:12 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I went up north this weekend to the cottage. Usually it is very dark up there at night time, but this time it was super-dark because the power was out. I layed on the bow of the boat for an hour looking at the stars. I saw the milky way, shooting stars, satellites and even Mars. Mars is getting closer and closer to Earth, and on Wednesday it will be closer to Earth than it has been in 68 thousand years. I guess a lot of you already know that...

It was beautiful. The waves, and the stars. The Mily Way is so nice to see, especially when you are in the middle of nowhere, on a lake, with no trees even in the way of the sky.

All I need now, is wings.

i noticed mars the other day. bright red star it looks like. i want to know how big it will be though. i heard it was going to be as big as the moon, but i don't know. i think they were lying. i'm gonna have to use binoculars to look at mars cause some crackhead stole my telescope. stars are amazing...especially when it's really dark and you can see so many.

Apparently it is going to look about the size of a tennis ball, but defenitly not the size of the moon. A tennis ball isn't big... but it's damn big for a view of Mars from way down here.
Someone should take a picture!

It's definitely not going to be as big as the moon, and prolly not as big as a tennis ball either.

That being said, it will be the brightest object in the sky aside from the moon. It's amazing. You go outside and there is the red eye of the war-god, staring down at you, brighter than anything.

I heard that it might actually be possible to naked-eye the polar cap, or see it just with binocs.

Saw this this morning. A little off topic but what the hell:

would be for psychiatry what the microscope is for biology and medicine
or the telescope is for astronomy."

that's a good quote. you should make it your sig...cause well, you're just supposed to have things like that in your sig.

i can't see mars yet because of the damned clouds...i'll have to try tomorrow.

I was looking at mars last night and wow, really amazing to think that that's where we came from, if we did.

Yeah, I just set up my new 5 inch 'scope to take advantage of the clear skies tonight...should get some really good views. If you check into it, most people living in/near a bigger city can take advantage of colleges or astronomical societies for free public viewing...two of my local universities, one high school, and the local astronomy club all are offering free viewing.

That's really cool thing to take advantage of. Astronomy people love to share knowledge about the universe.

space.com published "Hubble Makes Best Mars Globe Photos Ever" today.

"The first of two highly anticipated Mars portraits from the Hubble Space Telescope
was released this morning as the observatory's operators took advantage of a
proximity to the red planet not equaled in 59,619 years."

That reminds me...

You know, the human biological clock doesn't match the Earth's rotation.  We are, internally, on an (on average) 25 hour day.

The martian day is almost 25 hours...

I've been watching it for sometime now, probably 2-3 weeks, It's supposed to rain and be cloudy tonight so I won't be able to see it very well most likely.  If I happen to be able to see it I would love a trip on my back in a open field watching the stars, and I have a couple different mind benders I could add in :nut: ..

Where I live it's so flat in some places you look straight ahead and you see stars, you can spin around and see nothing but space in every direction, the stars flicker right off the ground in front of you.  It can be very intense if you add mushrooms or acid.

I just checked out the local weather report and it said only isolated showers, this could be the night! That would be pretty cool out in the middle of some passing thunder/lighting storms sporadically seeing the great red planet and the rest  of the universe.
