Dear FondaCox !

Dang ...... sorry to hear about the bug problem.

I was planning to do something outdoors in Hawaii. We have a slug problem ..... so I thought a flower pot (like yours) or some sort of tray would work well. ..... assuming slugs can't climb vertical plastic sides ..... can they?

Do you think they were flying bugs? Pacific NW ..... I wonder what you have there ? If they get high ..... cool.

I hate to share if they don't !!!

Well it's been 8 days since the last fruit (bug dinner).

Last week was kinda crappy weather, not hot during the day and totally cooling off at night. Today it started raining again.

Still no sign of any life in my flower pot...I gave it a good soaking with the hose 6 days ago.

Any ideas?

well...lemme ask you, have you kept it moist, have you put it in its own enviroment away from contams? hopefully you put did or at least put a baggie over it. im not sure man...post some pics its hard to diagnose your problem with your shrooms with out something to study with. did you take a print?
perhaps it was pure luck that they fruited as a fluke and its dead.
pray that your mushies will forgive you and continue to grow
post any details you did, and photos if possible.

you live northwest..they basically inhabit that area.
find one and take a print

First off, I haven't put a bag over it or anything...should I do this?  Won't I be cutting off fresh air?

Second, these were Golden Teachers, I have oodles of prints, so no I didn't take any prints.

Third, pictures?  well just look at the previous posting, and imagine it with no fruits.  I can't see anything either because it is in a green flower pot and there is a ton of verm on the top.  Should I turn it upside down and take it out to have a look?

Fourth, yes well cyan's are out of season for another 3 months up here, I've been picking them for 5 years, so no problem there...I've just never taken a sterile print.  I've taken lots of prints, but they all go moldy :mad: when I've tried to do the PF Tek for wood loving species.

you'd probably need to take that non-sterile print and turn it into a syringe, then turn it into a bunch of agar plates, isolate the best rhizomorphs from the molds that are going to be in abundance...then eventually, you'll have your clean mycelium.

granted, you might've already have tried this and it didnt work.

Thanks for the tips on the cyan prints...I guess I am scared to move to the next level and use agar...my work schedule requires me to travel 2 weeks at a time sometimes, this may just be a lame excuse...

But I do have very happy news to report! I dumped the spent casings and cakes described in my journal in the forest near the river under some ferns 2 weeks ago and it just got rainy and humid....








So the open cap one in the close ups is 25.5grams and the semi-opened one in the first pic is 32.3 Given the bug damage on the 25 gram'er i picked the other one even though the cap wasnt' fully opened.

WOW, I am going to keep up on this! I am sooooo happy right now! I can't wait to take the dogs for walk past that spot!

Ok so the one with the big munched hole is a little past it's prime, but it's still good! The second one is perfect, veil just broke, cap is still compact...I was a little drunk last night, so that might have contributed to me being so ecstatic about this find.

Outdoors in the middle of the forest isn't like a sterile FC. In the fall when I am picking wild mushies my bag is always full of leaves, needles, and a few bugs...but of course you wash them and they are fine.

Ok so back on topic, I spotted a few pins in the flower pot this morning that were not there last night. It must be the weather...its been drizzling rain for 2 days now. The last fruits in the flower pot showed up after a rainy stretch as well.

To prevent bugs, I placed the flower pot in a saucer with water. So now the bugs will have to swim to get to the pot.

I also flipped the pot upside down to have a look last night. I forgot that I put 3 inches of perlite in the bottom of the flower pot before adding the verm barriers and Hpoo.

Second flush of the flower pot, 3 nice sized pins taking their time...it hasn't rained in a few days so I soaked the "pie" with the hose after I took these pictures...I am hoping the water will be adequate to rehydrate the perlite and substrate through this flush...







Yeah if you look close there is a bit of contams starting on the "pie"... i tried to scrape it off, but I don't want to spread it...

Yup I have a slug problem and apparently they like cubensis!

Caught one fleeing the scene of the crime...i put a thick circle of salt around the pot base, hopefully this will discourage them....I guess my water barrier will have to be stepped up to ward these buggers off in the morning!






you can actually see where the slug took a big bite out of the one cap!
