Umm...

If they're set on keeping the child (and I don't necessarily mean abortion either, the adoption rate for average newborns in the US is surprisingly high), can you at least convince him to do something beyond "work a bunch of overtime"?

Some nightschools will help you to get a BA within one year, and short of that at least an associates' degree in a promising field. (I apologize if he already has these, it's just the overtime comment seems to suggest otherwise) He should have nine months (more or less) to get his life together, and thankfully that's just enough time in today's society. But he has to start now.

Ain't gonna happen.  This guy dropped out of the technical school I was in and that was easier than kindergarten.  If he can't make it through that then there's no way he'll have the fortitude to get a bachelor's degree.

He actually has gotten his life together somewhat.  He used to be an alcoholic and now that he works a lot he doesn't drink anymore.

It's weird but a lot of the people I know are reproducing lately.  It's like it just "happens" in your mid-twenties to a lot of people. 

Thank God I only have sex once every couple of months or so.  :yesnod:

I actually find it quite refreshing and fulfilling to have a significant amount of my money taken away from me in order to provide welfare for such irresponsible people.  It makes me feel good about myself.  :shrug:

But, yeah...he lives with his parents and has all kinds of bad credit issues.  She works some low-paying job and lives in some little crappy apartment I guess.
