Perspective

What does it mean to really put things in perspective? Is perspective not just another way to escape from the present, or is it actually a way to emerge from self-imposed suffering?

There are millions in the world whose day to day lives are defined by drudgery, disease, violence, squalor, hopelessness, misery. Putting one's own life in perspective in this broader picture can either be humbling, or a source of greater despair.

One can also put one's life in perspective by meditating on one's time here: even when the days seems long and dragged out, time is really just washing us away. "We're waving goodbye to ourselves," to paraphrase Ram Dass. But that too is an intellectualization which separates us from the unfolding, layered present.

Really gaining perspective, to me, is steering one's thoughts in any way so that the effect is remaining fleet-footed and light-hearted in an unfoldment which offers vast opportunity for mental and physical languishing.
