The Trepiodge Tangent

In this thread -- http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7224285#Post7224285 -- which started out as a critique of Ayn Rand's philosophy which she named "Objectivism", Diploid and myself had a fairly lengthy tangential exchange regarding the merits of the two great opposing metaphysical foundations -- Primacy of Existence vs Primacy of Consciousness. We had both just about agreed to pack it in when Trepiodge posted this:

(The same concepts could of course, be applied to any instrument which is employed in attempts to observe nature).

Do we or do we not inadvertently (or purposefully) create subjective conditions in order to observe and build models of the universe? Since we are limited in our tools of observation, our tools alter the reality we attempt to observe, and our models are limited by our choices of what to observe and categorize, is it not (to a certain extent) a leap of faith to claim objectivity? Isn't it best to admit that what we have, even in the most rigorous scientific or philosophical system, is but an approximation of what we hope is an objective model of a perceivable reality?



I thought it best to address it in a new thread rather than drag the first one further off into the weeds, so here we go:

By merely observing (and doing nothing more than observing), I (or you or anyone else) do not necessarily alter that which is observed. I can stand out under the night sky and observe a faint star. That star is changed not a whit by my observation of it. It won't shine any brighter due to my observation, nor will it burn out any sooner, nor will its orbital path change, etc. That star is completely indifferent to my observation, and will behave identically whether I look at it or look at the star next to it. It makes no difference to the star whether the human whose face is turned towards it has his eyes open or closed, or even has no eyes at all.

No. The thing is, you aren't observing light waves per se. You are observing the object from which photons are emitted (or reflected). The mechanism by which you observe a pebble at a distance involves photons being reflected from it which end up impacting your retina, true. If no photons at the wavelengths you are capable of perceiving happen to be bouncing off that pebble, you have no way of seeing it. But a pebble remains a pebble whether the photons bouncing off it are eventually stopped by a sheet of lead, a human retina, or nothing at all.

This means nothing more than that your unaided grasp at a distance of the attributes possessed by that pebble is incomplete. The fact that you cannot directly perceive (for example) ultraviolet doesn't necessarily mean that the pebble doesn't reflect ultraviolet. But it doesn't mean that just because it does reflect ultraviolet it doesn't reflect visible light as well. Imagine a mutant human incapable of directly perceiving photons less energetic than ultraviolet, but capable of seeing deep into the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. He will also be capable of observing that same pebble if he stands right next to you. The "colors" he assigns to it will be different than the colors you assign to it, but that's all. Both of you will be able to truthfully say "That pebble is about five centimeters in diameter and is resting on the ground about two meters from the water's edge, and is closer to tetrahedral in shape than it is to spherical," etc. etc.

One of the results of your visual observation of that pebble is that it allows you to locate it spatially. If your visual observation tells you it is within your reach, and you stretch out your arm and pick it up, then your observation is objectively accurate, no? If your visual observation tells you it is almost spherical, and you pick it up and feel it and it turns out to be almost spherical, your observation was objectively correct, no?

Can your unaided visual observation tell you all there is to know about that pebble? Of course not. So what?

Same answer. The fact that any single sense cannot convey to you every possible attribute of that pebble does not invalidate your visual observations of it. If it is very foggy (signal loss) then you will know less about it by merely looking at it than you would if the air between you and it was crystalline, yes. But so what? Same thing if the pebble is on the bed of a shallow stream and refraction leads you initially to believe it is slightly to the side of where it really is (alteration). But if you were to stick your head under the water refraction is negated and once again you can accurately locate it through sight alone.

By this I presume you refer to the human epistemological method of grouping existents into categories? i.e. thinking of both a sparrow and a starling as a "bird"? If so, I am missing your point. Can you rephrase this?

You've lost me here. I don't understand what you are asking. Can you rephrase?

But they don't necessarily do that. A cyclotron and a cloud chamber do alter the paths of the subatomic particles we attempt to observe, but a telescope doesn't change the star it's pointed at. An amplified microphone doesn't change the mosquito it is listening to.

Yes. What's your point? Of course it is impossible to know everything there is to know about every single entity I observe, or even about any single entity I observe. Nonetheless, the insect I observe on the floor at my feet which I shook off my shirt after walking my dog through a wooded area is in fact an insect, and any sighted (as opposed to blind) human with sufficient life experience sitting close to me as I type this reply will agree with me that it is an insect. The chair in which I sit is a chair, not a unicycle.

Are you arguing that since we cannot know everything (and it is obvious we can't) we can know nothing?

An interesting statement, allow me to expand on that.

"Observation is uncertain"
"Observation causes uncertainty"

I think the first statement is correct, and the second statement is incorrect.

If I were to aim a radar gun at you as you went by, I would get a measurement of your relative speed. If I continued to do this with more and more accurate radar guns at some point the energy transmitted to you via radio waves would become significant.

In other words, in the situation with the radar gun there will always be some uncertainty as to how fast you are going because the radar gun itself affects your speed, however slightly that may be.

This is equivalent to saying "Observation is uncertain"

However, it is not the case that by observing you, I personally cause the uncertainty. For your example with the star, you are right that by observing it you are not actually affecting the star at all. However, your observations of the star itself are uncertain, though in this case the uncertainty is caused by the star as it emits light.

I am speaking purely as a physicist and not as a metaphysicist.

First of all, I'd like to point you to my post in the prior thread, which was basically ignored :smile:

To the extent with which you believe quantum mechanics, some of your statements are flat-out wrong. All observation alters the observed; in the case of a star it is well below the level of precision of the observing instruments. However, uncertainty does have consequences for cosmic observation; see here and here for example. Also as I said, recent experiments considerably narrow your options as a physicist:

1) abandon time (non-realism; objects do not exist unless observed)
2) abandon space (non-locality; objects influence each other instantaneously over arbitrary distances, and in much weirder ways than previously thought)
3) accept an infinite proliferation of universes
4) abandon quantum mechanics, far and away the best scientific theory ever devised.

To me, anyway, the implication is clear: no matter what option you pick, it means that our intuition about time, space, and the reality of existence are deeply rooted in our own experience, are in fact intellectual constructs, and have very little to do with the deeper layers of the Universe.

That's just flat out wrong. For example through quantum entanglement it is possible to observe a particle without affecting it directly.

I believe you are confusing the observer effect with quantum uncertainty...

I take "the observed" to mean "the observed quantum system" and not "the observed particle of matter." I thought that was a pretty fair usage but I apologize for the confusion.

You are correct that uncertainty does not derive from the observer effect, but I was not making that claim. And, I don't think any of this has much bearing on my main point -- do you?

I'm not sure what your main point is to be honest.

You stated that observation always causes change, which I don't think is true at the scale that humans exist or at the quantum scale. I've given macro and micro examples where observation does not cause any change in the observed.

I didn't address your earlier post in the first thread because it in no way shows existence depends on consciousness -- i.e. that a distant galaxy can only exist if there are humans to note its presence.

Look at your own list of options. In order to not abandon our current model of quantum physics, we need only accept an infinite proliferation of universes. Accepting an infinite proliferation of universes does nothing to invalidate the axiom which states that existence exists independent of consciousness, all it does is to expand the quantity of existents.

Similarly, accepting option 2) does nothing to invalidate the axiom that existence exists independent of consciousness. The fact that the phenomenon of (for example) gravity propagates itself instantaneously over distance does nothing to show that absent humans, there would be no gravity.

I will try to clarify: my main point is that q.m. overturns seemingly obvious notions of reality. My secondary point is that you accused me of a false statement regarding q.m.; I feel this is either an error of definition or an error on your part.

Secondary point: I again assert that all observations alter the observed quantum system. With entanglement, they alter the system but not necessarily each individual particle. However, by definition of entanglement, each particle can only be accurately described with reference to the entire system. In other words, the idea of separate particles is a helpful construct but not a physical reality. In the case of macro systems, of course I agree that the impact is negligible -- but not nonexistent. And when discussing the fundamental nature of existence, that seems relevant.

To my main point, I will let what I've written previously stand.

I agree with your main point completely.

As for your secondary point...

Quantum uncertainty implies that within a system one cannot know precisely both the position and the momentum of a particle as well as other measurable quantities such as angular momentum, etc.

I am not disputing that.

What I said is that [within a quantum system] it is possible to observe a particle without affecting it. Are you saying that is incorrect?

Only at the level of subatomic particles, which humans cannot perceive directly.

From a philosophical point of view, the precise mechanism by which (for example) a human can tell that a pebble lies within the reach of his outstretched hand is irrelevant. It doesn't matter if the image of that pebble is conveyed to him at the speed of light or instantaneously, or if the information is transmitted from the pebble to him by photons or anti-photons, or if a photon is an incredibly tiny spherical particle or a wave or a wavicle or a bundle of vibrating stringlets, or if that photon remains entirely within this universe on its way to the human looking at it or if it instead detours through a few hundred alternate universes along the way. What matters from a philosophical point of view is:

-- does the pebble (planet, star, galaxy, nebula) exist even if there is no one around to note its existence?

-- if someone notes the existence of the pebble (planet, star, nebula), does the pebble's nature change?

To you as a physicist it may seem relevant. To a philosopher, however, it is irrelevant. Once again, what we are trying to determine is the validity of the axiom that existence exists -- that there are indeed such entities as pebbles, planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies -- and that their existence does not depend on humans (or analogous conscious entites such as Martians) capable of noting their existence. Quantum Mechanics -- fascinating though it may be -- provides no evidence confirming or negating the axiom.

Similarly, my noting the existence of a pebble as I pass it by alters the pebble not a bit. The attributes of that pebble remain unchanged by my acknowledgement of its existence. If I had never passed it by, it would still be a pebble. It would still have the same mass of X it possessed before I glanced at it, the same hardness of Y, the same volume of Z.... it would still reflect the same wavelengths of light and absorb the same other wavelengths of light, it would still occupy the same spatial co-ordinates, etc. The pebble is indifferent to my existence, and would have the same attributes if it was me scanning it with my eyes or a blind person passing it by without seeing it at all.
