It was nice meeting you too Randall, I'm sorry I didn't compliment your nose--but I wasn't sure if it was polite to do so or not. Anyway, it looks good!

And as for Alain de Botton--the idea of the "public intellectual" comes from the radical communist Italian theorist Antonio Gramsci, and all it means is that the reviewer considers de Botton to be someone who does not challenge the status quo, more talk than action--not that his work is pure shite. Frankly, one has to decide if Gramsci's belief that intellectuals must do more than think is valid at all. It even seems that the idea of the public intellectual as ineffectual, complacent and removed from the reality of revolutionary action in society is potentially damaging to social theory and philosophy because it means that the pure thought and analysis have no value outside of their connection to action. For something like a theorizing of "Love"--you can see how that's dangerous.

Anyway...sorry for getting wordy but I think the idea of the public intellectual is used lazily and without reflection here.

I don't know much about Gramsci - besides the fact that most of his work was written in jail, then smuggled out, and that people mostly hear about him through secondary sources - but I think it's awesome that he believed intellectuals should do more than just think. I think that so much of philosophical discourse is caught up in the quagmire or semantics, it's nice to hear a philosopher espouse the virtue of action.

Like I said, I haven't read 'On Love,' and I have to admit that I have barely read any philosophy devoted to it (besides the beginning of the Symposium - when I got weirded out), but a lot of the reviewers felt that he was just taking the words that other people had written and splicing them together prettily.

I never read On Love either, and agree that he should not be stringing other people's words together without crediting them properly or having his own ideas as well.

I wish that intellectuals could do more than think, but I've seen that in action--and it always reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Lisa, comic book guy, professor Frink and principal Skinner take over Springfield and ruin the town.

Just because the trees is what you miss
dont hate on the city that never sleeps
even when you dream about sweet home
relax and spark a fat cone
those sensations that are going to flow,
will take you to the peace you know
you can chill here but keep it low
feeling already ilke the brains are going to explode.
