It is an account that is controlled by a trustee (usually a bank). This trustee was given a set of rules to follow by the person who set up the trust fund. Trust funds are usually funded by life insurance policies or other types of inheritances.

My trust fund has rules that the money in it is only to be used for medical and educational stuff. Also, trust fund stuff is tax-free so you won't get hit with inheritance taxes.

No, the leather jacket was paid for by me.

That is a good question though. My bank seems to approve of essential expenses that you incur during the course of going to school (rent, food, car insurance, etc..) and of course they will pay for your books and tuition.

I don't know if you read my "Bitch about your problems" thread a week ago. My step-brother and I are named as beneficiaries of this trust. While the account is in existence he and I have equal access to it. There are certain time intervals where certain percentages of the trust are distributed to us (basically these are inheritances). I was set to get larger percentages because I was my dad's real son and my step-brother was adopted. My step-brother has been sucking the fund dry. The only way I can fight him is if I suck the fund dry. If I don't do this he will probably end up spending all of the money in it. It sucks that it has come down to this.

Well, you could get a good lawyer and sue to have the money reimbursed somehow. It sort of sounds like that's a violation of the Trust Fund terms anyway, but then again, INAL..

I already tried that. I got a lawyer and he sat around for a year and did nothing. Any ground that I had to stand on when compaining about my step-brother's extravagent spending was shaky anyway. If I can't get my trust dissolved or some money reimbursed into the fund, the only course of action I have left is to fight for my piece by sucking it dry.

Oh believe me...I've thought of some of that shit. I could tell them to buy me a $2000 computer and then take it back for a refund and get a $1000 computer and pocket $1000. I have all kinds of schemes like that in my head. I dunno if I should do them though...I don't want to get in trouble for fraud.

if anything, you should be actively taking all
reimbursements and putting them into another
account, transferring the assets from one to
another.

frankly, if there is structure to the trust, I
don't see how your brother is able to drain
anything above his fare share.

Well, like I said I'm not a lawyer. I'd be trying to convince them to buy me a house or condo if I were you, if there's enough bux in the Trust for that. That would balance things out nicely, and you'd have your own place!

My father's Will specifically states that the trustee does not have to make an effort to equalize payments between the beneficiaries. So, morally my brother is fucking me. Legally he isn't doing anything wrong.

He is my step-brother and he lives two-thousand miles away. I haven't spoken to him in six years (since my dad's funeral).
