What class is it?
Just an intro class? If you're new to it, it will probably take a while to get in the groove. Just keep at it!

Yeah its intro to philosphy. I have a freaking major headache.
I went to the library to read something that i thought would be a quick 1 to 2 hour exchange.
all of a sudden I hear, "the library is closing in 30 mins"
ACK! I gotta read the republic by plato and then the problems of philosophy by betrand russell.
I dunno how the hell i am gonna be able to do well on these essay tests about philosophy, and about this paper i need to write which is like 10-12 pages.

I dont think you are ever suppose to read anything from text book except English, but just to skim over and summerize what you are suppose to read, this way you will remember what you need to know and not the other bullshit. This is what I do, just a suggestion.

Oh thank you much. for those links.
Yes and i will be reading ahead if i can. Its just that i don't think i can read anymore today. My head is foggy right now from all the reading, and my eyes are not focusing correctly when i try to look at objects at a distance, so that means i been reading way to much in a sitting and i have to relax the eyes.

Dude, Philosophy class is all bullshit. Just nail the basic concepts and you can breeze through it. On the other hand, if you are having trouble understanding The Republic, im not sure what to tell you, other than, checj the spark notes.

No i haven't started the Republic yet, its on the list that we are going to be covering it soon.
From the jist of things so far its argument critizing arguments, rinse, lather and repeat.
But some of the logic stuff was pretty confusing in the third chapter. How they were using "some", "not", "if" , "or" "and"... etc.... its like it works one way, but then hey are like thats the prince way, and then the show the wrong way and thats the frog way and yada yada yada.
saying something was a prince theme or a frog theme i dunno...i was confused. And modals and such. I was like umm, yes... i read it, but i didn't absorb any of it... that was the frustrating part.
I tried to understand... hopefully the teacher is going to go over a bunch of stuff.

In introductory philosophy classes the teacher usually does most of the philosophizing for you.

Don't feel bad. I get bored out of my mind when I try to read philosophy. I always entertained philosophy as a pet hobby of mine...until I realized that it is too turgid and esoteric to hold my interest. I much prefer reading the Cliff Notes on famous philosophical works. It gets straight to the point.
"So and so egghead from 1647 was saying this and that about God, society, and the natural state of man" is much easier to digest than 500 pages of rambling run-on sentences and pedantic ego masturbation.
Try Cliff Notes.

A little disclamer, first: The spell check is not working for me, so bear with the spelling errors.
The trick to that logic stuff, is to substitute the letters for statements.
look at this example:
if a, then b
if b, then c
assume a
so
"if a then b" becomes:
"If I eat a bunch of shrooms, then i will trip my balls off"
subsititute every instance of "a" with "i eat a bunch of shrooms shrooms" (or something that fits, this is just a silly example) and every instance of b with "I trip my balls off" This example makes sense becuase, if you eat a bunch of shrooms, you will always trip your balls off.
so then come up with a phrase to substiture in the case of c. it has to be something that happens every time that b happens. So for me, personally, it is "i get a sick stomach" becuase every time I trip my balls off i get a sick stomach.
so its:
if i eat a bunch of shrooms, i trip my balls off
if i trip my balls off, I get a sick stomach.
assume that i ate a bunch of shrooms.
the logical conclustion is, of course, I will get a sick stomach, or in other words, C.
I hope this is what you meant by logic.

True that. Some of the world's greatest thinkers were horrible writers. That's why, when you're in a class, you should find summaries and synopses of works instead of trying to read the works themselves. None of that shit was meant to be read under a time constraint; you often have to digest it. And they do sometimes pull words out of their asses.
That reminds me of a post I need to make.

I feel your pain brother. I haven't had a math class in 6 years and just started College Algrebra. I have no idea what the fuck is going on. And we got assigned about 100 problems. It's also the summer semester so it's accelerated. Which means I'll be completely lost tomorrow, the 2nd class. I may have to drop it. We'll see.

Yes i get that, thats number 1 in the book of usual patterns which they call the princely valid argument.
But the froggy argument is....
if p then q q so, P
there are more examples in the book, and such that show the right way and then the wrong way, but i can't digest them for some reason. I totally understand the right way, but don't understand why the wrong way is wrong and such.... they are switching stuff around and it just confuses the hell outta me.

1) Get off the fucking computer
2) Do some fucking math problems
You don't have to do every single problem assigned, just enough to where you know your shit. But actually doing the problems is the ONLY way to learn math. I find that smoking a bowl while doing math helps alot. But maybe I'm just weird.
So by whatever means, learn your shit. Do it now!

That's affirming the consequent, and you can't do that (unless you live in the White House).
The opposite is denying the antecedent, and you can't do that either.
So really you're just fucked.

The example is basically saying:
if it rains, the ground gets wet
the ground got wet,
so it must have rained.
Think about it, anything could have happened to the ground, somone could have spilled their soda, or threw a water balloon, or ect.
