I am using cow shit, rice and verm./cow shit, birdseed and verm. right now with great success. My jars colonize very quckly with this mixture and not to much of a worry with contams so far.

I'm experimenting with a Quinoa based substrate right now, and have been pleased with the results so far. I just cased my first batch, so after the first flush or two, I'll probably give a more detailed report.

Oh, and, no, store bought manure will most likely not work. Go to a field and get some old dried cow pies (no, they do not stink).
