you would probably run out of nutrients for the mushrooms.
But i'm not an expert.

Slicing a half-pint cake in 10 layers is probably excessive, but 3 or 4 layers is fine. I have torn them into about 2cm chunks before, as long as you have a fairly thick layer it will all grow back together fairly nicely.

The standard method would be to lay a 1/4-inch of moistened vermiculite. Then cut your cakes into 1-1/2 to 2 inch slices. Place these on the vermiculite layer. Retain a couple of slices to crumble and place the crumbled cakes in the spaces between the slicss. Gently press down. Add a standard 1-inch casing and your set. You will realize a much greater harvest and more flushes than by birthing on the cake itself. Good Luck.

That is a good idea. In fact when slicing your cake you are creating more surface area for your cakes to receive moisture and pin from. Just last night I experimented with 5 cakes. the first one I cut in half and cased it. The second one I sliced in in three pieces. The third in four peices and the the fourth one in five slices. The fifth cake I crumbled up into as small of pieces as I could get and then cased it. In 2 weeks I will post my progress and post some pictures with the results of this experiment.
