Well you have a classic case of contamination. Any of the signs that you are seeing are really bad. You definately don't want to eat any of the mushrooms or cakes that are bad. You could make yourself very sick or who knows what else. You should only see pure white mycelium and the mushrooms are whitish stemmed with slightly golden coloured caps. Just take a look at some of the pictures in the other messages.

thanks. i'll kill the jars. one refresher question: the cake that's already in the terrerium (the one with the white fuzzy stuff)-- is it bad too, or is that okay? thanks again.

Yellowing is often a sign of excess moisture so all you could be suffering from is condensation droplets from the humidity, you should be fine as long as it aint stinkin'.

i had yellow a few times and now i figured out it was just water discoloring them or something like that. so I wouldn't worry tomuch about the yellow stuff but the others I would use caution and judgment. Hope you don't get sick and die :smile:

thanks for all the replies. i actually tossed the yellow one already, but i have a feeling that was the right thing to do: the yellow wasn't IN the mycelium, it was growing on and through the rice cake. it was MUSTARD yellow. and frankly, even if it really were mustard, i'd be afraid to eat it. i'm still concerned a little about the other jar that has the white fuzz peaking where there wasn't anything before. it was a bare spot when my friend put it in the terrarium and now it's going apeshit in comparison to the cake, but it's still as white as the rest of it. today tho, i think i noticed a yellow pin starting to form. anybody familiar with this happening? thanks.

The white fuzz sounds like cobweb mold, I THINK spraying that spot with straight H2O2 should take care of it. (hydrogen peroxide like you by at the drug store)
