the best way to do this is to yank out your phone book and call every single grocery store and department store until you find one that carries them. the half pint widemouths work perfectly and are generaly recognized as being the absolute best size available.

I live in Colombia (South America),
I had a hard time finding those wide mouth half pints, so Ive used basically any jar that i come across (mainly those 1 pints tapered jars that pickles, sauces, etc come in).

When its 100% colonized just take it out with a sterilized knife or spoon and case with 50/50 mix.

Hope it helps,
Plankton

Delyrium, I feel your pain.

I am in the need for 1/2 pint, 1 pint, and 1 quart jars...

ANYWHO. I live in a major metropolian area. I've bought jars at many places around where I live. Today, I drove around for almost 2 hours looking for any canning jar I could find and I came up empty handed!!

From what I was told by a few folks, canning jars come and go. A store will buy them, in 2 weeks, they're all gone, and then you'll have to wait for them???

Sounds odd to me too. Maybe the sales people that I talked to couldn't think of a better excuse to tell me:-)

I hope you find them!

try the new disposable/microwave proof containers from Glad called 'Gladware'. look for them nearby the baggies at grocery stores.
they are re-usable but also cheap, about the same as jars.
their only drawback is that they are flimsy compared to jars, esp. when hot so handle them gently.
a tip-- paint the holes in the lid 'cause they are damn near invisible once the verm. barrier is added.

Hey Delyrium,
I had the same problem, so I`ve decided to try the glasses. U can use 3 dl glasses instead of canning jars. Tall glasses are not so good, mycelium likes to spread but slightly dislikes to climb. Try some shorty drinking glasses, and cover it with double alufoil, tape it on the sides, n poke 4 holes on it, and ready to boiled. Only microwave sterilising is not recommended with alufoil, but drinking glasses works good.

Thanks SOOO much for the help!! (I'm on a hangover from E last night so everything seems to make SOOO much more sense). I got today off so I think I'm gonna make a few calls around to stores and stuff. I live in NY (20 minutes from the city) so you can imagine how us NYs don't like to garden (that is IF we even have a backyard). But uhhh...lucky me I got a *faery forest* as a backyard (a BIG backyard with many trees, vines and etc.). Uhh, I'm going off topic cause I really am *lost* right now. Uhh, ya, I'm gonna go call a few stores. Thanks!!

Well I came home today (from school, stoned like a bitch) and my mom goes "Guess what I got?" so she showed me she got me canning jars! (a dozen). She got me Kerr - Regular Half Pint Jars. These seem to be pretty good and the mouth is a LIL bit bigger than the jar (bottom) so I am really happy. I am going to start making the substrate today.

Haha, thank you Sean...I'll keep in touch with you on how to grow.
