No, you can grow directly from the cake itself.

From what I understand, casing provides a larger surface area for shrooms to grow in, plus provides a contaminant barrier for the mycelium network.

A few hours a day is enough to initiate the pin set. If there is enough light for you to see the cakes, they will pin and fruit (assuming your temp, humidity, etc is correct).
