I have an urge to read about epic battles
    #7155792 -

Can anyone point me towards some good historical fiction, in ebook form? Authors, titles?

By 'historical' I mean no elves or magic fairies.

Umm...you can look at lore from www.worldofwarcraft.com

I don't know if they would have anything about epic battles but I know they have a shit load of lore.

I dunno about fiction, but I can point you in the direction of some real historical battles and maybe you can find some fictional narratives of them.

I just started watching the HBO series Rome on DVD and am enjoying it - excellent historical fiction IMHO. On the bloody side. But epic, with battling and scheming.

Sorry. I usually read non-fiction, watch fiction.

What kind of battles?

If you're into righteous rioting you can research The Battle of Cable Street of which there are several accounts floating around on the Web.

For classical battles its best to ask this in a wargamers/re-enactment forum.

If you want a GOOD book on Canada's part in WWI...try reading "Vimy" by Pierre Berton. An excellent account of how we won the Battle of Vimy Ridge, when everyone else who had tried had failed.

The British and French had lost around 200,000 men between them trying to take the ridge, probably the reason they gave it to Canada to take. Well take it we did! With just 20,000 men! We only had a casualty rate of 50%, too :smirk:

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Hehe... it's not just battles I'm interested in; I want to read well-researched fictional stories about people living in past centuries (let's say 300BC to 1800AD). What was the life of an 11th century serf like? A seventeenth century explorer? I am fascinated by this stuff.

If you can find it this
is an excellent book on the types of battles you are looking for. It can be a bit ethnocentric at times, and isn't fiction, but it does a good job explaining what it is about the soldier of the winners of the battles that allowed them to win.

Pick up any book by Sharon Kay Penman.

One of my favorite authors, historical fiction about the English monarchy in the 12th-15th century.

These are long books though, 800-1000 pages. But I love them and have read most of them multiple times.

Recently I was reading about chess and somebody compared a famous player, Paul Morphy, to the famous Japanese swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. Morphy was an American player who, at a very young age, went to Europe where chess was much more prevalent and kicked everyone's ass. Similarly, Musashi was such a master from a very early age, his first duel was at 13, that we went around and completely dominated longstanding schools of the best warriors, like the Yoshioka School, considered the foremost of the eight major schools of martial arts in Kyoto, the "Kyo-ryū".

I became fascinated reading about him. He was such a badass and did some very peculiar things, like often preferring to go into battle with fully armed opponents, while wielding nothing but a wooden sword. We was also a skilled artist amongst other things and did some writing in his later years.

The wikipedia entry is a pretty good, fairly quick read about his most famous exploits:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miyamoto_Musashi

Here is his most famous book about warrior strategy and theory, it's a cool read. Of course, it's translated from Japanese so I don't know how intact it is, but there seems to be a unique voice here:
